Damn I'm Stupid!!!!!

If any of you guys are like me and have to do every bit of work on your car, listen to this...I've been working on cars for over 10 years now, and changing oil is one of the easiest things you can ever do, right? Well, so I thought. After removing the filter and installing the new one, I fill the car with my 10W30 oil (FU CK that 5W20 crap!) and start her up. All good, right? Wrong. I hear this hissing sound. I think it's a leak in the intake system somewhere, so I pop the hood and take a look. I see nothing. Then I look under the car and see a huge puddle of oil. I couldn't believe it. My car ran for like a minute with no oil. It all leaked out at the filter. I know that won't hurt the engine because it never reached operating temp so the friction created wasn't as bad as it could've been, but DAMN GINA!!!!!

So, next time you change your oil make sure you check your old filter for the seal. If it's not on the filter then don't install the new one until you find it. I double sealed mine and that's why it leaked. I got complacent. I even looked at the filter when I removed it as a habit, but I wasn't paying attention so I didn't catch it. That was the first thing I learned about changing oil and it bit me in the ****. So people, please, don't get complacent.

lol. at least you didn't break anything. I just take mine to the dealer for oil changes. If I had a lift in my garage I would do it there, but I don't have that luxury. plus finding the time to do it would be hard. busy busy busy.

it must take just as much time to take it to the dealer, wait/leave it, and then go home, and go back again if you left it

The dealer once stripped the threads on the oil pan when they overtightened the drain plug. I don't know the details, but my father had to pay $500+ to get it fixed. This was on our old '87 Honda Accord. It is still very much worth it to do everything yourself! Just don't get careless and think you're infalible like silverdevil said.

I like having the receipts that say 'oil change at --000miles' to prove I took good care of her when I sell it
