save your money for a swap, unless you really love your d17,then save for turbo.
Do some research you will see that you will not make serious gains as you could with turbo. After turbo then you should beef up internals. You could to motor work first, but after spending that money you would'nt have that much of a faster car, but patience is virtue, cause then when turbo comes......
Emanage by the way.

you need an adjustable cam gear to tune and also vafcII should work. emanage is more for turbo cars.

Actaully the D series as a whole has been out just as long as the B series, and while they stopped making the B series, the D's are still in production. Also, the number of D engines in the world is far greater than B series. And given all that, D's still don't have nearly the same amount of parts as B's. But you can still make a fast D16 eninge, why not try a D17?

the good thing about going n/a with the d17s is that they're so abundant and cheap ;P

But yeah, like gear said, VFAC should suffice. And a cam should have a adjustable cam gear, AEM makes a decent one IMO, you want to look at how you adjust the cam timing and how many settings you have on the gear, the more setting the better. You should plan on some dyno time though to get it perfect.
