question
DOes anyone know why Honda went to a SOHC for the 01 instead of the double?? My guess would be for fuel mileage reasons but I would like confirmation. I think going with SOHC is just plain
Thanks.
Thanks.
For a Civic? Keep in mind... it's just a Civic, lol. I like what NighthawkVTEC said about our Civics (I'm not quoting him, but he said it like this.): It's not a small sports coupe, but it's pretty fast for an economy car.
There are a lot of Civics out there... but the regular... genuine Civic has always been SOHC. Look at it's horsepower... it doesn't need to be DOHC just by looking at those #s.
The only ones I AM AWARE OF with the DOHC VTEC are the ones with 160 horses (or more) are...
99 Civic Si
97 Civic del sol VTEC
02 Civic hatchback
Believe me, that SOHC VTEC in the EX is better than a baseline 140HP Integra with no VTEC. That's my opinion. If you want DOHC, go for a sports coupe with a DOHC in it. The regular Honda Civic will keep it's civility.
But with 127 horses in the top of the line EX, you're not gonna benefit too much expecting a big sporty feel. It's gonna benefit in areas like gas mileage and a quiet ride. More horses=less gas mileage. It's... an economy car. It's potential has been confirmed over the years that it could be fixed up to be sporty and very fast, but the 7th generation Civic aftermarket is... slow. (I guess you can thank the RSX for that. Or perhaps Honda's engine technology.)
I would be happy if Honda brought back the SI in a coupe instead of a hatchback, though. It doesn't appear as if it's gonna happen, and the only way (not truly confirmed yet) to make that happen is the RSX engine swap which is currently in the works.
Answer: It's what you drive.

im no Civic expert, but weren't Civics always SOHC?? no worries tho... DX/LX got more HP and torque and the EX remains the same HP but gets more torque.... (it's just a shame that these new 1.7's dont seem to react to performance parts
)

Yeah, looks like the only real performance part is the CAI. No one that I know of has said that their exhaust has given them more horses or they feel a change in performance. The DC Sports headers from what I hear don't do much of anything either. It's just extra air. I have yet to understand why...

Thanks for your responses guys. Don't get me wrong, I am VERY happy with my Civic, just living in Canada, my EX is an Si and I think that anything that has Si on it should be DOHC. Look at it this way though, less parts to break down!!!!
Mind you it is a Honda, so things rarely break down anyway!!
I just wish they would build a Civic with their F1 engine in it!!!
(note: detect sarcasm please, I am not serious!!) I have always loved Hondas and will continue to, if I want more power I will just have to change manufacturers, maybe to Acura!!!

hey, just to let ya know.. althought u may have figured this out already, Canadian Si=American EX... for some very odd reason, they just slapped different badging on the back of this car between the countries.. hmmmm
anyways, the 160HP DOHC ur thinking of will debut soon in Canada as the Si-R (once again, different name, same deal as the Si her in the state)

Mind you I haven't had to use them yet this winter, freaking January and they are calling for 50 degrees Fahrenheit on the weekend. I mean c'mon, this is Canada, where is all the snow eh!! Edit: Oh yeah, forget to tell you, the heated mirrors add 30 HP so I have 157!!

Now I just need some stickers!!! wow, haha, they really DO amaze me with they're engineering, that's so cool about their mirrors and all that extra HP
seriously tho, come on Honda, you think it doesnt snow here in the states either? give us heated mirrors! you think we dont like HP? give us a type-R!! grrr

Yeah, some parts of the States are farther North than where I live in Ontario!! They could have at least given the Northern States the heated mirrors, but then what would poor old Canada have over you guys, nothing but our back bacon and !!!
Since as far as I can remember, Civics have been SOHC. The only DOHC Civic in North America was the 6G Si/SiR. DOHC powered Civics are available in Japan, but are not subject to the stricter emissions controls, gov. mandates, etc.
Honda will make another DOHC Civic, as most of you know, in the 2003 Civic Si. WOO WOO! Anyway, one must remember that the Civic is Honda's economy car and it thus should get good gas mileage, with more of an emphasis on general efficiency rather than speed. There are a ton of Civic owners who modify their cars and do care about performance, intakes, headers, etc. However, there are a lot more (the majority) who don't even know what SOHC means, let alone how many hp their car has.
If you really want a DOHC Civic - two words for you - engine swap.
