VTEC Point

I just finished installing a VTEC light on my car and my buddies car. His car is a 2000 SI (SI-R in Canada) and mine a 2001 SI (EX in US). We both
have the VTEC solenoid, his on the front of the valve cover mine on the back. Both the same, one wire into the solenoid. His car has a VTEC point
at around 5600 and the light comes on at that point. On ours, I think that the information we have heard about a 3 stage VTEC is true. As I was
driving the light came on around 2500 - 3000 and stays on all the way up but below 3000 the light goes off. It works on the oil pressure. If you
drive gradually, it won't come on until 3300 - 3400 but if you drive hard it comes on at 2500. So if the oil pressure is high VTEC comes on earlier.
I was a little dissapointed to find this out and I think I might take the light out because it just stays on too long.

2,500 and 3,400 rpm seems to be too low for the 3rd stage VTEC... so I suppose its the 2nd stage... or rather, the normal stage... and I suppose the reason it stays on is because normal stage is considered VTEC too... and when it hits the 3rd stage, it keeps staying on... so in a sense, we have VTEC all the freaking time. heh. I duno. thats a elementary way of putting it... kinda corny.

then again when u think about it, since its 3 stage VTEC, light should be on once you start the engine and get going... since 1st stage is below 2,500... second starts at around above 2,500 to 4,000-5,000 depending on conditions (oil pressure, throttle amount, and I think there's junkload more condition for VTEC to switch cam lobe)

but yeah, I guess it'll be better if the light can go on like... when each stage is triggered, not when you're in the stages.

Are you sure you have the light set up right? From my understanding there isn't really a "3 stage" vtec. Vtec is simply a shift in position of the cam lobes (or lobe in your case) to a larger cam with greater duration on the valves at a set point. You might want to check and make sure the light is set up right and is compatible with your 7th gen engine.

What stage 3 Vtec mean anyway? I know a lot of people talk about that but do they really know what happen to the engine when stage 3 comes? Is there really a stage 1 stage 2 Vtec. Or just a switching point when the Vtec will engage? VTEC operates the stock cam like a larger cam with more timing but only at certain times. when you start from idle it wont engage because the engine needs more low end to get going. rather, when you are driving in the upper bounds of the rpm range, vtec kicks in and actually creates more of a lift duration on the camshaft (people with vtec can actually feel the engine "float" and pull you along faster than you were going below the vtec point). in a sense, you have a really good high end cam shaft without losin the lowend part. Same thing with the new toyota VVT-i and VVT-iT.

There is no such thing as stage 3 vtec. A car with vtec has special cam lobes. There is a set of low cam and hi cam lobes on each cam shaft. so each cam has two different positions. the low cam lobes operate on the low end of your rpm range. when you hit your "vtec point" (mine is 6,000rpm) the cam shifts positions to the high cam lobes to create more lift and duration, giving your car that boost.

As for your question the1sthotboy... In order to get VTEC in your car, you must do a swap of the head portion of the engine. If that's the route you go, I would suggest doing a complete swap. Including ECU, etc... Either way it's expensive.

now whether our D17A2s are such VTEC engines, thats still up for debates I guess. but I think it is.

but a definite example of a SOHC 3 stage VTEC engine would be the D15B.

also, it has been quoted on the TOVA sites that the D17A2 engines are also a form of 3 stage VTEC engine... this was in an article explaining the K20 engine and iVTEC.

Capyoda: I've actually emailed the owner of the asia.vtec.net site and he did get back to me on this subject. This is what he said on how we can tell by ourselves whether or not we have 3-stage vtec : ( I haven't gone out to do this yet... to damn cold outside)
