Wheel flew off!!! ... funny, but sad...

Finally it's up! After a long waited of tyme! Anyway, here's what happened on January 12!

On Saturday I was with my friend driving to Pleasanton to fix my car because I didn't like the adjustable springs I've put into my car. Okay, there is a Bart track that separates the freeway. And a big fence so that people won't go over to the Bart track. Anyway, while I was driving, all of a sudden the driver's side front wheel flew off. Heheh. I was on the 3rd lane. And went from the third lane to the left shoulder scraping! LoL. And so called the insurance ryte away to call for a tow truck.

Then a highway patrol stopped by and I went up to the car and she was like "wheel flew off" Heheh, I was like "yeah" in my mynd I am all like "how'd she know?" Then she waited until the tow truck came. When the tow truck finally came. The guy was all like, "we can't tow it because it is on the ground, and even if we try to, your front bumper would come off and that will cause more damage to it... You will need a flat bed." And so the tow truck left and he said his company will call me with 20 mins. about the flat bed.
Never called. So I called back the insurance. To send for another tow truck flat bed

Then another highway patrol stopped by and he came up and he was like "Where's your wheel?" I was like to him "It flew off...!" Heheh. And I told him that the tow truck is about to come. And so he left and another highway patrol stopped by again and it was the same person from the first tyme. She was all like "tow truck didn't tow you?" And then I was all like "no, we needed a flat bed and it's about to come." So again she waited until the tow truck came.

Then the tow truck came and jacked the middle and then he jacked the front. Then put the spare tire because my original wheel was lost. LoL. And all the lugs were missing and the one of the thing you put the lugs it torn off. So he got 1 lug from the rear driver's side and front driver's side. And then he took off my scissor jack and then he took off his hydraulic jack and the car went like. BAM! It dented the middle part coz of his jack. Grrr... Then we finally got home! There was 4 of us and was stranded for 5 hours! Heheh.

Then after Sunday…my dad and me went back to look for my wheel and couldn't find it and called Bart police and couldn't find it. Now I only have 3 wheels. LoL 3 wheel conversion! LoL

Bad thing about it is that my mom myte sell my car, she things it's coz of the modifications that I did to it.

==========

Bart found my wheel after 3 days of the accident and also my dad's friend said that it flew off probably the wheel was not aligned because my car was too lowered.

Attached is an overview picture of what happened for you people that does not wanna read this.

<< damn. did you do any type suspension or wheel mod? >>

I didn't change anything on the suspension except for the dumb Matrix coil-overs. Wheel mod, just painted calipers that's all...

<< that sucks, how bad was the damage? >>

Well, to start it off, side fender was dented hella, bottom middle dented because of the dumb tow trucker dood, uh... Front bumper probably scratches under, and engine problem, malfuntion light is on but it runs but scary though. I don't know what else all I know my whole front end right side got scraped like hell!

<< MatriX coilovers were the mistake you made... BAD name >>

I admit!

<< Did you titen the wheels on there correctlyWho installed the coilovers for youI say hunt them down >>

Yes I tightened the wheel correctly! Also MAS Wheelhouse installed but they did fine, all but didn't tighten much the struts so I tightened them up.

aznvoyce: I don't understand how this could've happened without some advance warning. I mean, if the wheel lugs were getting loose, you should have felt steering wheel vibration... LOTS of it! It can't just pop off like that during normal driving without you feeling that something wasn't right with the car...

You're REALLY lucky to have gotten out of that with minimal damage. Nice diagram of your accident, btw...

I did feel the vibration, wheel was shaking! But I stopped on a near by gas station the lugs were tight! Sheesh, so I drove it to the shop slowly but it was no use, wheel flew off. And yeah I was lucky enough that there wasn't a serious accident. And thanks 'bout the diagram.

man, it's good that you can sit back and laugh about something like that happening to YOUR car.....
I would still be in shock.

Oh and very nice diagram. I think so far it's been the highlight of the post.

Good luck getting everything fixed and back to normal.

According to your post, the truck driver took a couple of lug nuts from your other wheels and put them on the spare. If he was able to do that, then your wheel lug nuts obviously were loose and came off.
I'm guessing someone may have tried to steal your wheels and loosened the lug nuts in the process but was not able to take off the wheel. You drove off and eventually your wheel came off.

I think someone messed with your car. Wheels dont just fall off while your driving.

Yeah, well, thanks for all the concerns. And CapYoda, sory to hear about the accident. Well, there are a lot of possibilities why the wheel flew off. It's just plain crazy although it sucks for me because my dad's friend said, since the car's modified, the insurance company will not pay for it... Is that true? The only main modification that I did was rims, and coil-overs, and exhaust with custom pipings. Any feedbacks on that? Thanks.

Man, I'm all paranoid now. It almost makes me want to check my lug nuts every time I get in my car. I'm sure you will. So sorry to hear about your unfortunate accident. I bet the whole time you were like "Wait till the guys at 7thgencivic hear about THIS!"

I work as a Tech for Discount Tire Company. The 2 main reasons for wheel offs that we encounter are usually from someone not installing the wheel on the hub properly. Before tightening the lugs you should make sure that the wheel is seated flush against the hub. Second, you should pre torque or hand tighten the lugs using a star pattern and then use a torque wrench in a star patter to final tighten the lugs. Torque for hondas is 80 foot pound. Also, Make sure the studs are clean and free of rust before mounting the wheel. Hope this helps.
