Insurance: Are other people automatically insured if you give them permission to drive your car?
I'm 17 so I have the really expensive beginner driver insurance, but I'm wondering if I can let my friends drive my car. Do I have to purchase this type of insurance in addition to my basic insurance or is it part of the basic insurance that everyone has?

ok well you know how cops always tell you that if your friend is drunk or whatever take his car and drive him home, so isnt that illegal because you're driving without insurance?
yeah, you'd be driving without insurance but that would be better than driving drunk. you'd have to check with your insurance company if you are insured for driving cars other than your own. because of your age i doubt you are, older people are normally.

I've bean wondering that as well. I think the insurance companies are making extra money off of us that way. I'de make it so that your insurance would have to pay for the damages (if there were any). So there would be a clause that you can drive any car you want so long as you're insured. Or maybe the car itself is insured, not the driver. Something like that.

Ypu can get what is called a Ghost driver added to your insurance which insures the car even if a person not listed in the policy is driving. So if you were drunk n your friend had to drive it, then it would still be covered.

insurance is not for the person driving the car, its for the car. Anyone can drive the car, as long as its ok. You gotta give permission to the other driver. thats why noone gets tickets when the cop pulls over someone for DUI and the sober one is driving the friend home. as long as the person who is on the insurance is in the car, then it is ok.

hmm well i'm 17 and the 2001 civic's state farm insurance says my mom's name...but i guess since its parent/guardian it doesnt really matter. I already got a ticket and the insurance was okay.
i phoned 6 different insurance companies here in Ottawa 2 days ago asking the same question, because i wanted to get a 2nd talon TSI and insurance is crazy for me so i put it on my moms name only $50/month hehe.... the agents said as long as the policy holder give authorization for the driver not listed on the policy to drive it is ok, if accident occurs the policy holder will take full responsiblity... but the driver not listed on the policy must have a policy with another company... also if there is a accident and say you dont want the person that gave the authorization to take the bad record/charge you can tell their company you will take the charge just have to give them your policy number....
yes it should be under insurance as long as u get that policy!!!
and also as long as the person thats not under ur insurance doesnt live in the same house it should be covered
well at least mine is!!

So let me get this straight ... I drive my car but the car is insured under my moms name and we live in the same house. So this means im ok right? So lets say i get in a accident or get a ticket *knocking on wood* i wont get in any trouble or anything right? Thanks
<< My dad is a master insurance agent and he said insurance goes with the car as long as the policy holder gives permission!!!! >>
there must be a requirement for that though right? example. the person thats not on the policy must have a policy somewhere else...??
