7 speed D17?
I was browsing through the Japanese Honda site and found the Civic with the 1.7 litre engine and it had the shifters as small paddles behind the steering wheel and it was a 7 speed...7! ok, wtf??

Well I think what they did was change the entire gear ratio of it. Because if that virtual thing is correct at 100 mph he was running like 3500 rpms in 7th gear so I bet you that the first gear winds out really quickly.

Hey man that civic is so hot i love the interior ..why do we get crap and they get good stuff like that..
its awsome i love where th shifter is

If i am not mistaken that transmission is a CVT simulating shifts. They have it in some of their latest Vans and smaller vehicles. (Japanese Versions) If you don't press the "7 speed mode" button it works just like a normal CVT.
***edit***
BTW it is the d17.
Have you guys also noticed that they have a 4WD version?

no thats like a special gearbox that comes in the EP2 civic equiped with AWD as well.
this gearbox uses 7 gears that work as a triptonic tranny you can have the car change them automatically or u can change them yourself. its like a version of the CVT transmission designed so you dont feel the gear changes it is new technology that japan automakers are coming with and we probably wont see any car with that unitil the next decade if so.
if u are wondering about how i know this, i saw the web site and i had my friend read it for me

FYI........
Power is transmitted from the engine to the wheels in a smooth, stepless manner via Honda’s newly developed CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). This belt-driven transmission, with its infinite ratios, provides acceleration that feels linear to the driver’s demands, as well as effective engine braking for linear deceleration. By eliminating the lull, lurch and wasted energy of conventional gear shifting, Honda CVT makes driving much smoother, more efficient, and extremely enjoyable. Its remarkably compact and lightweight design also contributes to exceptional fuel economy matching that of manual transmissions. The automatic ease of Honda CVT is provided in your choice of normal or sporty drive mode, selectable by center console lever. There’s a virtual gear ratio map and 7-speed mode with simulated gear positions, for those who prefer an active feeling of gear shifting. Whatever mode you choose, the CVT adjusts smoothly to driving conditions.
