2nd Place
2003 Vishnu Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
Street drivability:
1/4-mile: 11.6 sec @ 120 mph
Road course: 48.5 sec
150-to-0-mph braking: 710 feet
Total course time: 104.1 sec
The Vishnu tuner guys at first looked like middleweights who’d mistakenly agreed to get into a group grope with a bunch of heavyweights. The Vishnu Lancer Evolution had the only four-cylinder engine and was the bargain of the crowd by $18,000 over the next-lowest-priced car, the Active Autowerke M3. But the Evo came close to achieving a huge upset.
In 2003, a Vishnu Evo showed up at our four-banger congregation. It hadn’t undergone much rethinking—it made 310 horsepower instead of 271—and was good for a fourth-in-class finish.
It’s amazing what a little boost can do. This year the Vishnu was adjusted upward to 25.0 psi to produce another 165 horses, for a claimed 475 horsepower and 450 pound-feet.
On the street, this upgraded Garrett turbo with superhero boost delivered quite a rough-edged thrill ride. Below 4500 rpm, the engine is pretty much lifeless, and then—bam!—it shoots you forward to the 7800-rpm redline. The coil-over Öhlins shocks didn’t compromise ride quality, but the laggy engine, loud exhaust, and fourth-gear grind netted a worst-in-class three-star drivability rating.
This 53-percent increase in power, however, didn’t necessitate new pistons or a different compression ratio. The necessary additions were cams, rod bolts, head studs, beefy Cusco front and rear differentials, and a high-capacity Exedy clutch.
During the timed event, the $25,251 in performance modifications was good enough to put down the best time of the day from 0 to 60 mph (3.4 seconds) and best-in-class quarter-mile and road-course times (11.6 and 48.5 seconds). Unfortunately, the car couldn’t piece together all these “bests” in a single run because of a pesky intercooler hose that wouldn’t stay attached. During its only complete run, our speed readout detached from the windshield, causing the Vishnu driver to fumble around to reattach it, spoiling the elapsed time. The driver didn’t appear concerned, knowing he had three more tries to set a best overall time, but then the problem arose with the intercooler hose.
Bottom line: The $56,874 Vishnu Evo finished second in class, just 0.2 second behind the 751-hp, $120,365 Mallett CTS-V. —Dave VanderWerp

You guys dont know the potential of an evo do you? that evo runs 11.6 in the quarter....
thats faster than the BMW M3 and audi a4 tested there along with it being faster than alot of serious ****. Its almost as fast as the twin turbo viper or vette in the quarter because they are not alowed to have slicks and can't put horsepower down.

My friend's EVO runs 12.5 with 3in turbo back, twin plate clutch, intercooler, piggyback, and HKS cams not tuned. EVOs have great potential thats why I want one so bad. And now that the MRs are coming out its going to be amazing

yeah those two vipers are so bad ***. the hennessy is supposed to be the fastest viper. i saw it last spring..it ran in the 9's. and the RSI viper...well i'll bow down to that any day. RSI makes some kick *** cars. all their vipers ran under 10's the whole time last spring as well. i've got some more pics of the hennessey and rsi from the TX2K4 supra show in houston/san antonio.
I'll flip out and kill people.
