My MR2 Spyder and Celica GT-S review.
From my previous thread today. http://www.7thgencivic.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=176326
Well my sister thought about practicality and just walked away with a brand new Corolla S. Anyway, we knew the fleet manager so he pretty much let us test drive any car we wanted. My bro test drove a used IS300 sports wagon, Infiniti Q45, etc.
Me? I test drove an MR2 Spyder and Celica GT-S.
I'll go with the GT-S first...
I personally have test drove an RSX Type S and the GT-S is a no competition against stock versus stock. Let me do the good first without comparing the GT-S to the Type S and MR2-S...
The good stuff:
... the throws are pretty short, and really has an "umph!" on the engine. Clutch is pretty smooth and interior design is quite nice. It's quite a head turner and engine is quite loud when you push it as if you had an aftermarket air intake. Turning circle is pretty good compared to my 7th gen.
The bad stuff:
... the shifter is pretty stiff. I had trouble shift from first to second because you have to really shift it into gear, it's not pretty smooth. I was quite disappointed that you can't go passed 7k rpm due to it's rev limiter, and red line it at approx 7.8k - 7.9k, which is pretty much rev happy. When pushing the car to its limits, I didn't think it was quite strong. EDIT: Interior room is quite tight. Both front and rear are tight.
--- I when up against a 2nd gen Integra with aftermarket rims and dropped. He was left behind... Heheh.
Compared to the Type S, it's a no brainer, the Type S has pretty much short throws and smoother shift and soft clutch. It's a lot stronger than the GT-S.
Now to the MR2-S (manual)...
The good:
Whoa! 130 hp is quite impressive on this car. You gotta drive it to believe it. I guess the MR really makes a difference, it pushes a lot better than the GT-S and has better response than the GT-S. Clutch is deep yet soft. Throws on the MR2-S is quite acceptable. Turning circle is quite impressive. EDIT: Interior room is quite roomy.
The bad:
No electronic top! You pretty much have to stop to put it up. Also not much cargo space, of course it's a roadster so what do you expect? Throws are pretty long compared to the GT-S. Not much of features in the car.
--- I came up to a Dodge Ram 1500 (I believe Bumble Bee edition?) anyway, from a stop to another stop which is I guess 100 meters. The MR2-S was keeping up witht he 1500, we were really side by side. Although, I wish the MR2-S could've won due to it's lightness but it was a tie.
Over all, I'd get the MR2-S, that's just my .02 cents.
Well, I had a fun day driving them. Hope this helps in anyway.

Is it me or the one I test drove, there was something wrong? I asked the sales manager, how come I can't rev over 7k? Once I hit 7k rpm, it just goes "vroom vroom vrrom", and you can't go passed 7k! That was a great turn off fer me.

^^^ Oh, the lift isn't really noticable unlike the RSX-S you can really feel the Vtec kicking in. The year of the GT-S was an '03. They didn't have an '04 GT-S in stock at that time just '04 GTs'.
hmm nice ride.. personally i'd go MR2-S but my friend is a celica ***** and would prefer GT-S over the RSX-S... they're rival cars, on the newcelica and clubrsx lots of good info back and forth... i just tell them D17 power
The rev limiter kicks in when it idles or when you're driving? The RSX-S has a rev limiter when it idles also.
Might wanna drive the GT-S. I remember there were a lot of complaints about the shifter in it's earlier years. I've only test driven the GT 5-speed.
All this shifter talk makes me want a short shifter. Good review.

The rev limiter kicks in when I'm driving. So when I'm trying to red line first gear at 7900 rpm, it won't let me coz it's capped on 7k rpm. So much fer calling it a high revving performance car.

actually only the 2002 and 2003 celica gts have a rev limiter, and i see u drove a 2003 so yes it does have a rev limit but the rev limit is actually right at redline so u should be able to pass 7k rpm. my friend has a 2000 gts and that thing has a rev limite of 8400rpm, when it hits vvtl-i it ****in pulls
I've been good. You need to PM me your phone #! Last time I tried calling you (which was a while ago) I couldn't get in contact with you cuz I think the # got changed.
7,900 RPMs is still considered high revving in my book.

Re: My MR2 Spyder and Celica GT-S review.
just a little insight my girl has a gts and the car won't go above 7 grand untill its wormed up once the car runs for a little you can push it to about 8400 and it makes a big differance. the vvti kicks in at like 6k i think and all the way to 8400 it gets pritty nasty

not too slow check this out

perhaps this one is cool with the 3SGT swap

they do perform better than ours
oh from the 00 to 02 they rev near 8400, i remember reading at newcelica.org and from 03 and up they brought it down to 79. they were made to beat on gs-r's, the rsx-s outperforms it by far though.

Re: My MR2 Spyder and Celica GT-S review.
i love the gts myself... its a good compeition for the rsx. They're pretty much even. Even the rsx guys agree. Both cars are very decent.
Re: My MR2 Spyder and Celica GT-S review.
yeah, nobody really paid attention to the 7thgen celica's. There really good cars and stock wise they handle very well on autocross too. check out my brothers fully built boosted 7thgen celica

imo i think they look better than an rsx.
