BMW 1-Series
I was just reading about the BMW 1-Series. Looks like it will be coming to the US in the '06-'06.5 Model Year with either a 2.5L or 3.0L inline-six. If they are to produce the same amount of power as their equivalent engines in the 3-series and 5-series, these puppies will fly! It would be about as big as a Ford Focus Wagon btw (so far the only one I have seen is a wagon.) It will be interesting to see a luxury compact car!

They won't have the hp of a 3 or 5 series...
It'll range from 150-180 hp max, they might even throw in a 200 hp one if sales are good. They come out on this side of this pond in Sep, and Kuwait will get them in Jan.

Uhm...I don't think they have I6s in them. The 1 series is badged 116, 118...and in BMW nomenclature the last 2 numbers of the series is the size of the engine. Hence the 1 series would be a 1.6L or 1.8L 4-cyl. Now talk to anyone that has owned a 318 and they will tell you how gutless they are, besides the fact that the 1 series is...well nasty looking. I have said it before and I will say it again, Chris Bangle is RUINING BMW. That plus the rumor circulating that BMW is going to produce a minivan (no confirmation on that one) but it just makes me sad.

Also I heard the 1 will be in the mid $20k range anyway. You can pick up a nice used 3 for that. This is going off the price of the 1 in UK:
16,000.00 EUR Euro = 19,452.03 USD United States Dollars

BMW has said that they would bring them here as BMW's, and by that they meant good handling luxery cars w/ at least 6 cylinder power and RWD. Otherwise they would just sell it as a Mini.
The person that said it looks like a 3 wagon, I see it too in the shoulder profile w/ a hint of Z4 in the bottom. I personally like it but I would rather have a 1 series sedan or a 2 series if they ever come out w/ one.

Well...not holding my breath to see if they bring a 125i (which doesn't exist anywhere else in the world) here. Are you thinking of the 2 Series? Although there is no confirmation BMW is going to split the series up, they did state that the US most likely will NOT get the 5 door HB, but the 4 door sedan or coupe variant, haven't heard that they were going to switch the engines out. The models on sale in EU are the 118 and the 120 with diesel versions as well. But here is the shot I found of the "possible" 2 or 1 series sedan/coupe.

Autoweek
Here is a link that talks about it a little. As of right now, there are no 6-cylinder one series, but then again it's also not offered here. Four cylinder engines are standard on it and on 3-series in other parts of the world, while here, we have six cylinder engines standard.

Just the fact that they would be trying to market a car starting at $20k, they have to cut the costs somewhere. More than likely they will go with the 4-cyls with a "top of the series" 123is. If they bring the sedan or coupe it might be worth it to look at.
BASE PRICE: $24,500 (est.)
POWERTRAIN: 2.0-liter, 150-hp, 145-lb-ft I4; rwd, six-speed manual
CURB WEIGHT: 2945 pounds
0 TO 62 MPH: 8.7 seconds (mfr.)
Where's zzyzx? And, those numbers aren't spectacular by any means.

$20k? From what I've gathered the base price would be around $23k and to keep cost down they would use a lot of 3-series components. I'm w/ u on that one though, a coupe or sedan would be a lot more interesting to me.
like I said before...just going off converted EU price in UK. Base in UK is ~16k Euros wich converts to ~$20k. Course then you have to add in import and Uncle Sam's cut...so yeah, $23k - $25k would be more like it.
And no, the power/weight ratio doesn't sound too good, but BMW is more interested in handling and the balance of the total driving experience. Only us Americans gauge our cars off of HP/Tourque only. Most of the reviews I have read from the UK and German magazines that have reviewed this car are raving about it. I don't like HBs...but if they bring it here in the coupe configuration
I'm waiting for zzyzx to get in here and call it a fat pig, those are the numbers I was talking about. But, for that money and for a wagon, I'd prefer a mazda6 wagon or a wrx wagon. Plus, those body lines...I just don't have the words.

just wait... the 1 series is gonna have 5 door, 2 door and convertable... the convertable is sick! 20k+/- 5 just wait... 2 series is a 09-10 expectation... the 1 series is gonna be like the baby of the 3.. not as much options and nice amenities but still still sick as ****.
