next oil change: plz help me decide!

hi guys!

i guess the time for me to change my oil is coming....and i need your opinion..

right now, Im using Mobil 1 full Syn 0W20...which is recommended for the application of our vic (5W20)....before this oil, i was using standard dino bulk oil on the shelf of a Toyota dealer....where i bought my car..

as we all know...it's kinda hard to find the real Syn 5W20 with lower price tag......i know that there's brand like Royal Purple, Redline, etc...which got full Syn 5W20 with high price tag.....

now, there's this is new product (i think) from Castrol, which is a full Syn 5W20, Castrol Syntec 5W20. The last time when I did my oil change, about 3 months ago, there was only Castrol Syntec Mix (dino & syn) 5W20....so I don't want to use it....

ok, the question is:
should i move to Castrol Syntec 5W20 or just stick with Mobil 1 0W20??
i kinda feel the noise coming from the engine though....with 0W20 on hot summer day.....

oh yeah, im actually gonna change my oil filter from Fram to K&N! =)

I've used this setup for a while now and have had no problems:

4 Quarts (little extra) Valvoline 5w-20
1 K&N Oil Filter (Part# 1010)

Havent had a damn least bit of worries/problems

Stick with Mobil 1 0@20. Remember Castrol Syntec is really NOT a full-synthetic oil. They are allowed to call their Syntec oils "Full Synthetic" because of a court case ruling. Syntec is a Group III base oil, not the real full-synth PAO-based oil like Mobil 1.

Just stick with whatever you've been using if it works for you. So long as you change it regularly, any oil that meets OEM specs will do the job.

yeah, I use 10w30, I live in deep south Tx. only thing worse than the humidy is the heat, most shops told me thats best becuz of the heat and the dusty conditions. the dealer ship told me that I should only go with Honda 5w20. with summer coming in hard, I'm just going to stick with it. only thing I've tried is castro GTX, but I've notices that a mere 200 miles over 3k gets me super ultra sh!tty mpg.

Um, actually, I've been getting changes at the dealer all the time with regular oil. And my car is a mess at 24k miles. Pistons covered in sludge and carbon, 2-3mm carbon buildup in the header ports, and black valves. You would think it's a 10 year old car.

What places generally carry the K&N oil filter? I called the AutoZone in my area and they said they have to order it. Stupid part is that they said if I order today (Friday), it'll come in on Tuesday. I'm gonna be upstate on Tuesday so I called the AutoZone up there to order it from me and they said that they cant and the part doesnt even show up on their machines. How is that possible? Was I just speaking to someone who didnt know what they were doing?

Go to this website for all your oil questions:

Even more than that, there is the mythical "German Castrol" 0w30 that everyone seems to swear by, and unlike other castrols, it IS full syn.

Personally, I use redline for 9k miles at a time, using mobil 1 m-104 oversize filters changed every 3K miles.

Sounds like its time for an Auto-Rx treatment GB... could it also be that you drive the car hard? Not making fun, just saying if yours looks like that, I'd like to see what mine looks like. I've been using syn since 10K miles and am wondering if it was just wasted money... *sigh*

royal purple is crap compared to other synthetics. it's a low tier quality synthetic charged at a high tier price.

do not use royal purple. for the same money MUCH better oil can be had.

my suggestion is to simply use the mobil 1 0w20. the 0 is only the viscosity when the oil is cold. the w means it can be used in winter. and the 20 is the viscosity at operating temp (usually around 235+ degrees)

synthetics often do better than dino oils, however, the gap has quickly closed.

what do i use? at this point, synthetic only provides a longer drain interval for me. use valvoline synpower if you want a good synthetic with an excellent TBN and resistance to heat and shear. your civic can go 10,000+ miles on valvoline synpower no problem. mobil 1 will do well too, but i wouldn't go more than maybe 7500-10,000 miles.

if you want an EXCELLENT oil that will work just as good as the synthetics out there (with the exception of drain interval) use havoline GF4. it's an incredible oil with some great addpacks. you can go 5000-7500 miles with this oil no problem.

so cliff notes. use mobil 1, valvoline synpower, or havoline gf4.
