Money is always an issue... Everything costs money, so believe it or not to become sponsored you have to spend the money.
From what I know the BIG Companys will give there products/services for free while some will only give a % off... However, There is always a catch.
From my opinion, Get into a "Team", from there start building up on mods, and then you will get noticed quicker.
OR
The lazy way... Do it all by yourself, make your car hot, and make a decal, "YOU'RE AD HERE"

Its a bit harder then just going every where and asking if they would sponsor you...
You have to sell your self. Its like a Job interview only tougher because you have to make it worth their wild to get them to give you stuff.
So hers my recomendation. write up a Proposal, with discriptions of what you have done to the car, what you plan on doing with the car, where you Intend to show the car (Sponsor ship is essentially Advertisement for the sponsor) and a wright up of you and what you do. The more professional the proposal the more likely you'll get the soponsor. Remember that there are about a Billion Ricers out there that are constantly bugging companys to give them sponsorships just so that they can get free junk from them. You have to show the company that you arnt one of them and that you will Do whats best for their product (as in you'll show it off at shows in a Professional manner)

There was an issue of either HCI or Buckaroo a couple of months back that gave a very detailed "way" of obtaining sponsors. They gave good advise as to how to get noticed, how to contact companies/dealers, etc. If I still have it lying around, I'll try to post the exact month and magazine and hopefully be able to fine a link to the article on the web.

Sponsorship is hard as hell. A lot of times, companies look for a car that will catch a lot of attention. They will not sponsor a lightly modded car. I've had over I-don't-know how many thousands of dollars dumped into my car. I barly have a handfull of serious coorperate sponsors.
It also helps to know people. Goto the shows and network like crazy. Get to know anyone and everyone. You never know when they can help out and refer you to a sponsor. But don't hold your breath for sponsorship unless you know your car can place in shows and what not. Not trying to sound like an *******, but it's the truth. If your car is not a show winner, then it's prob. not what companies are looking for. Good Luck guys.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that the company has no interest in "helping you out". They will sponsor you if you can deliver on exposure for less than they are paying currently or you can deliver them exposure that they currently cant get. They may be "good guys" and friends but for them to give you free parts, it MUST be a good business decision for them.
If you are looking to get sponsored, Think of it as selling advertising, because thats what it is. The question is: how many people will see the ad, who are these people and would they be likely prospects to buy the product and how much $$$ do you want for the exposure? Simply driving around town is not quality exposure and it's not verifiable by them so they cant put a $$$ value on it. Also, who is more likely to see your car, and specifically the sponsored component and think about buying it? The guy at the import car show who is crawling all over your car or the 38 year old mom with two screaming kids in the back, sitting next to you at the stoplight?
To put it into perspective, I had my car in a booth on the main floor at SEMA this year. We have actual, verifiable figures on the traffic in the show and everybody there is "in the business". Putting that in the proposal along with photos of the car on the show floor by independant web sites event coverage (urban racer etc...) lends alot of credibility. Also, having the car in a magazine and showing the article with your proposal helps also.
IMHO, the bottom line is that no sucessfull company will sponsor you untill you have already proven that you are serious. If you have not already tricked out your car, attended/won some reasonable large shows and gotten some good ink then they will assume that you are simply trying to get free **** (just like the other 99 proposals that arrived this week). Before you say, "how am I supposed to win shows without being sponsored?" well, all I can say is re-read the first sentance of my post.
Not trying to throw water on anyones hopes, just trying to put some of my experience in this field to use.
Good luck with your search!

I am sponsored by many companies and never have I been asked to pay a fee upfront (or ever) for it. I would be very, very wary about any company that asks for money to sponsor you. If you think about it, is't that more like you are sponsoring them?
I would run.......
I would run.......
sell your soul
the amount of money you need to spend to get a sponsor is not worth it. Sponsors are usualy useful when your good at something or in the spot light alot. NO sponsor is going to sponsor someone whe is just going to drive around the and just go to school. osrry ot burst your bubble but it's easier to win a sponsor ship through a contest than gone one on your own for the most part.

1) modify your car well so you think a company will want to sponsor you and yes you will spend ALOT of money. But once you are in, then you can get more connections.
2) Prepare a proposal with shows/races, wins, pictures, magazines you were in, etc. Also, provide a cover letter with your intentions. It should be in a nice neat package ready for them to read.
3) Contact only specific places. Say you have everything but you would really want some cool new gauges. Send your proposal to Faze or Autometer or even a new up and coming gauge company. Although the newer companies can make crappier parts, if you get in early then they would be more willing to sponsor you. A guy on my car club got lik $300 worht of Faze gauges before they were getting really big.
4) Sit back and wait.
You can either be a weekend warrior or you can go in the game full time. Be warned that you will be constantly asked to update your car or even get new cars to invest into. It isn't a cheap game.
Sometimes, I can see right through myself ...

I know quite a few members have been getting "sponsered" through Sport Compact Pro. Making them pay a 'registration' fee of anywhere from $50 to $100 to be "sponsered" by them.
They provide you a list of only a few places that you can order from. Supposedly they pick up anywere from 25-65% of the cost of the part(s) you order. I've yet to actually see it work.

I filled out the form for SCP and they called back saying the same thing taz757 said. I got the price list but the prices are higher than normal and by the time you get your discount you save maybe $20-$40 from the price it normally would be. They asked me for $80 registration I told em no thanks. Stuff like that...let it pass. Show your face a lot at shows and start with small parts then work your way up. Gotta spend money to make it.
