Question RX-7 or MR-2?

Like the Subject says: RX-7 or MR-2? Either a 1993-1995 RX-7 Twin-Turbo, or a 1991-1995 Toyota MR-2 Turbo. Also, when you reply with your choice, please explain why you chose one or the other.

Thanks everyone!

Edit: To clarify, your choice doesn't have to be specific. You can base it on looks, performance, price, handling, modability, etc. But, please, explain why you made your choice. Thanks!

RX-7 although harder to find, is definitely a better platform IMO. Mainly because rotaries take to boost much better than conventional engines. Just take care of it and it'll be good to you. It's easy to make ***** to the wall power from it and it's a definite contender on the track in terms of handling and agility.

The MR-2 has one thing in my mind going for it. It's a mid engined RWD car making it extremely well balanced. Tune it right, and it may even be faster than the RX-7 around the track. Where else in the world besides European exotics can you find a mid engined RWD car?

For what I do for fun, both would be great. Stock the MR2 would be the better choice, as its a good car for B-Stock, not the best, but good. Past that, prep the RX7 for either ASP or SM2, good car for both of those classes.

otherwise, the RX7 would be much more forgiving in the twisties, the MR2, although a good handling car, requires a lot of skill and a properly preped car to be able to run it as hard as it could be. A lot of MR2s left the roads going backwards due to Driver error and improper setup.

ASP preped RX7

B-Stock MR2

get the rx-7...my friend has a 93 TT and i love that thing, really quick, only problems hes had is overheating problems, but for 3rd gen rotaries that was a problem they had due to their cooling design,

I like MR2s also but definately get the rx-7, chicks will think its a viper! hehe

RX-7 is a bit more difficult to maintain... you cant just bring it to a regular mech and expect to get things done. But for the MR-2 since it's mid-engine, I hear some mechs charge extra for that as well. I would take either car, both cars do need good talent to drive it well at the limit. Choices also depends on what resources you have, and what your purpose is. Either car is not cheap.... but both should be very rewarding.

Bottom line, both cars have proven drive trains! As for the cooling problem, get an APEXi cooling system, and thicker apex seals.

Rx7s are going to be a lose less forgiving if you mod them incorrectly. The rotary engines are tough, but you got to make sure you build them up correctly. Also, it's a higher maintance car than the Mr2. You really need to keep an eye on your oil levels, warm your car up properly, etc.

I wouldn't even say there is a comparison between an Rx7 and an Mr2...Rx7 is quicker, handles better, etc. Mr2's are sweet cars though.

I've owned 3 2nd gen (86 - 91) Rx7s including 2 turbo2s. I loved them!

Goto Rx7forum.com for lots of good info.

Okay it's really unhelpful when you just say you hate something and not state why. I'm really curious about why you hate rotaries...give some grounds for your statment.

V6 MR2's? A V6 in an SW20, or what? That'd be really awesome... especially if it was an aluminum-block V6, because then you probably wouldn't gain much weight, if any. In fact, by switching to an AL-blocked V6 you might lose some weight over the rear end. Hmm... *drooling* lol

Yeah you can stick a Camery V6 into an MR2 but The 3S is an awesome engine. I would take the MR2 because its more reliable than the 13B. You can boost the crap out of a 3s too. I have seen some sick MR2s and some sick RX7s. Both cars would be great but the MR2 would be my choice.

LoL still can't make up your mind Evan? I would get a MR2... I'll show you a friends mr2 w/ a 2nd gen jdm 3s engine If you wanna come down. Rx7's are nice but its a bitch to maintain, I have a neighbor with a Rx7 but it's always on jackstands haha.

lol I can never make up my mind, haha.

I've got a friend with a '95 RX-7, too. He loves it to death. It actually hasn't really given him any problems yet. *knock on wood, probably*

Although, after talking to him, driving his RX-7, looking into them, I think I might go with that. We'll see, though.

Keep posting your opinions/comments, everyone! Maybe I'll change my mind... again, haha.

ill vote for the MR2. my friend recently sold his 3sgte candy-land gold Mr2. It had the TRD widebody kit and some 17" rs5 jdm wheels with a fat lip. it looked hella nice. was pretty damn fast too for having the stock turbo. he had a new turbo and stuff laying around but sold it and will probably be getting an is300 next. but yea, mr2 gets my vote for reliability and looks.

mr2 + widebody = win

You're kidding me, right? LoL

The FD3S RX-7 (3rd Generation) was available in the US from 1993 to 1995. Check out Edmunds or MSN Autos if you really don't believe me, lol.
