this is a direct copy from what i posted onto a dodge forum b/c im lazy and pissed


ok do any of you still have stock exhaust if so i would like to know how many decibels it is...

i had this ***hole pull me over today said i made his car rattle inside from two lanes away and he was going the opposite dirrection at a stop light that is two lanes wide...... he used this to chase me down and then accuse me of speeding which went away fast i guess he was trying to get me to confess or something to speed but i was going like 53 on a 50 not speeding at all for this road any way i turn onto a side street b/c i see something flashing coming up this now one way road the longest time.... i turned b/c there was a chicken truck going 35 so i was gonna take the long way home anyway when he turns onto this road he turns off his lights and flies up my *** like he is gonna surprise me or something waits until i stop at a stop sign probally waiting to see if he can get me for running a stop sign then pulls me over.

thats where it gets interesting he comes up to my window and goes
"Son you in a hurry"
i go
"No" which i wasnt i was just coming home from class had nothing else to do today
then he goes "You sure did hit it when you got onto crooked oak" Thats the road i turned down to avoid the traffic
i go "It is 50 officer"
Then he just gave up on that i guess he was trying to get me to cop to speeding or something which i wasnt

then he starts this about my exhaust
he goes "You know you have a problem with your exhaust"
i go "Whys that"
he goes "i see you have dual chrome tips coming out the back that is not factory"
i go "It passed inspection in october exactly how it is right now"
he goes "its not like stock"
i go "whats like stock"
he goes "im gonna go write you your ticket"

so now i sit and wait while during the middle of this a buddy of his comes up starts talking to him while im sitting there blah blah blah about 10 15 min later he comes back

he goes "i need you to sign here"
i go "OK but you need to explain to me first what does like stock mean"
he goes "its needs to be stock"
by this time im think WHAT THE F**K DUDE!!!
he goes "i would put back on you stock exhaust"
i go "this is as stock as i know this is the way i bought this truck basically"
he goes "take to the dealership you bought it from"
i go "i bought it off of ebay from a dealer in texas and it had a muffler and all on it and i made it quieter to repass inspection in maryland but it was quiet enough with the louder ones"
then he goes "how is it run"
i go "its y-piped from the header into the cat the into a 1 in 2 out muffler"

he then gets on the ground looks at it with his jealous 40 year old *** with pimples scares still on his face on the ground and looks at it

i then signed it while muttering to myself see you in court *** wipe

he gave me a 55 dollar violation for quote "modifyi operatin veh w/ unlawfully modified exhaust"
he then quoted the violation as title 22 subtitle 609 paragraph b
which reads:
"(A) modification that increases sound prohibited-a person may no modify the exhaust system or any other noise abatement device of a motor vehicle driven or to be driven on the highway in this State in such a way that the noise emmited by the vehicle exceeds that emitted bu the vehicle as originally manufactured"
(B) operation of the improperly modifed vehicle prohibited- a person may not drive on any highway in this state a motor vehicle with an exhaust system or noise abatement device modified in a way prohibited by subsection (a) of this section"


what ticks me off is this passed inspection like this i only took off at 2200 rpm as a max hit and my exhaust isnt even that loud its quieter then 3/4 of all the modifed exhaust trucks in my town basically i was profiled at the stoplight by this asswipe who obviously got a boner from looking at my truck and then came running after me unwarrently endagering about 50 other cars judging my the way i saw him driving in my rear view mirror and knowing how busy the road was at this time


sorry i had to vent but i also need your help i am arguing this in court and a stock decibel level from sources would be helpful

one last thing IT BARELY RUMBLES THE **** INSIDE MY OWN TRUCK WHEN I TAKE OFF

Dude...it's a $55 ticket just pay it...face the facts, that exahust is illegal, they dont test decible levels on inspections, they check for integrity of the exhaust and the emissions levels out the tailpipe. And why do you assume that the cop had a boner for your truck just because he pulled you over? God forbid he pull you over just because you have illegal equipment on your vehicle.

As a side note, I had Borla exhaust on my Jeep, and while it is 50 state EMISSIONS legal, it wouldent pass a decible meter check.

Especially the way that law is written. I would verify that is indeed the way that law is written and then see if there have been any cases that were won in court that challange that law. Otherwise, it sounds like Maryland is saying you will maintain your stock exhaust. You could go find the decibel readings from a stock Dakota and measure them against yours. Of course if you appeal to the judge that it passed inspection, that there are no exhaust leaks and the truck is the way you purchased it...I dunno...he might throw it out.

he went on a pursuit to follow me through miday traffic to pull me over for my exhaust???? thats really is needless endagement of everyone around he could get me another day if my exhaust is really that loud. The camera made it louder then what it really sounds i mean if you listen in the beggining you can here the sand crunching under my feet

If you pay the violation you dont have to put a stock exhaust on. It doesnt mandate that anywhere on the ticket from what you said, just his vocal "I recomend you put the stock exhaust back on"

yea i know most of those dodge dakota r/t's are loud even stock this cop that lives in my neighborhood actually has one with a dual exhaust im like, i hope u dont pull people over for exhaust issues since you sure have a loud one im sorry for you man

That sucks man. I had a cop pull me over and he was all lookin at my exhaust tip for so long tryin to figure out whether or not to mention it and make a fool out of himself. MD cops suck. Yes. If any of you MD cops are reading this, you suck.

Only thing that might be arguable is check with your local dealer as to how you can order the exhaust. A former friend of mine ordered his 99 dodge ram from the factory with pipes straight out of the cat, no muffler. If you could have ordered your truck that way then yours would actually be quieter than stock. Just a thought that might help.

heh, down here in south GA we don't have inspection, and are not required to use CARB legal parts. One time I got pulled over a cop tried to give me a ticket for my intake because I didn't have the sticker that was supposed to come with it. I politely informed him that I was not a resident of California and did not have any laws that regulated that part of my car, he got frustrated and left instead of trying to write me a bs ticket

Basically you have a tough law there. It says that you can't modify it to be louder than stock. The cop sees that it's modified and he hears that it's pretty loud and put it all together. If it comes down to you arguing in court you wont win, because the judge will see it the same way. It's not OEM, it's upgraded, and it's louder than it would be with OEM parts on there. Pay it and skip the court.

However in SOME states they do require state troopers to have a 4 year degree, and I have yet to be pulled over by a NJ state trooper...so maybe it works

stock exhaust is a hi flow cat and hi flow muffler from dynomax so hopefully it is close to what i have on their, i really dont know i have never heard a stock R/T mine came to me with a 30's racemuffler that was all flamed out so it sounded like open headers.... the thing that gets me is there are plenty of other louder bigger trucks in town..... i really need to find the rest of the stock info

^ well obviously you know that your car is louder than it would be stock, so what are you complaining about? Also, in court i guarantee you will get that ticket taken away. Tell the judge you bought the car like that and that you had no idea it was louder than stock

I think you have a pretty good chance of winning since the truck is a "specialty" vehicle of sorts...it's very conceivable that the cop mistook the exhaust note as illegal when it is actually at (or close to) stock standards.
