Backfiring...
Just thought I'd ask those who may know. Why do some cars backfire? (I don't mean when they have problems, like a beater) rather I mean like high-performance or race cars, such as cars in Formula One, WRC, ALMS, etc... What causes those engines to backfire that doesn't happen in a normal run of the mill engine, such as our beloved D17? Is it harmful to those engines, or is it just part of their high-performance nature?

Overcarburation(sp??) They tune their cars to run really rich so when its idling or when downshifting some unburnt fuel leaks into the exhaust then BLAM!! My dad had an old beater dodge van & he droped a 360 in it with dual glasspacks that came out right behind the doors, when he floored it & let off on an exit BAM! BAM! BAM! ...double barrel action baby
It was funny as hell, that van looked like **** but would own alot of cars.

Since everyone else dragged this thread OT, here's your answer: http://www.rallycars.com/Cars/bangbang.html
For those too lazy to read, it creates exhaust gas while off throttle so the turbo stays spooled between acceleration.
