Motorcycles
For my birthday I just got a motorcycle safety course! (in VA, that means I get my motorcycle driver's license). I've been wanting to for a while now, and now I'm starting to think about motorcycles. I probably won't have enough money until summer, but it doesn't hurt to think. It's going to be my first bike, so I was thinking a 600cc would be nice. Any suggestions? I'm looking at a 00-02 Suzuki GSX-R600. They run $3,000 - $4,000 used off ebay, which is about the upper limit of my capabilities to earn by start of summer (i'll be getting my licence May 9th). I just wanted some input on what you would get. After I get tired of this bike, i LOVE the Yamaha YZF-R1; 999cc, 180hp, 15.5k redline, and 370 lbs!

My first bike was/is a '03 Suzuki SV650 (pictures in members ride section). It's really light handles like a dream, and has alot of low end torque. Only complaint is no real top end speed, but who needs to go above 130 anyway? The SV was rated as the best starter bike for alot of years. i can highly vouch for it.
CBRs are really nice and so are Katanas. Katanas are very affordable used bikes, Hondas tend to be expensive used (mainly because they are good hehe)
but thats just my 2 cents.
and btw. i pay about 500 a year for insurance in NJ a year.

my brother had an '89 Katana 750, and he had nothing with problems with that thing. Katana's are good bikes, but I'm going to stick more to a 2000, or something around there, year model, which means that to get to my $4,000 price range, I have to stay away from the really nice bikes. One of my friends had a Kawasaki ZX-6R which he vouched for. As far as the SV650, I'm really looking for something more full-bodied than that, if you know what I mean. I want a sports bike.
One other question, is about helmets and a jacket. Im leaning towards an all black helmet and a nice black leather jacket, but not the chopper-style leather jacket. I don't really know where to go to get one of those.

I bought a 2000 Honda CBR 929 for my first bike. Everyone says to get a 600cc bike for your first, but it's all about watching the throttle. But yea, the new CBR 600 is awesome!!
the gixxer is an ubersexy bike. but sort of heavy feeling-and one of the more "race-oriented" bikes (riding position-wise).
if you're going for your first bike, the cbr600f4/f4i seems to be pretty forgiving, and looks nice as well.

A good site for accessories, i.e. helmets and jackets, is www.helmetharbor.com

thanks for the helmet/jacket link! Im split between the GSX-R600 and the CBR600. From what people say, the CBR might be nicer, but I like the looks of the Suzuki better, and I can find it about a grand cheaper. As far as the insurance goes, how much would it go up? I'm 17, but I'm tacked onto my parent's insurance policy, and they have VERY good driving records. Actually, my brother got a bike when he was about 17, so I guess I could ask them. As for a color scheme, I think all black with a few white details would be hot. Crazily tinted helmet visor, black helmet, black jacket/gloves, and just like the decals and crap white.
Instead of going on what people here say...why don't you actually call the insurance company and ask them. It's their job to give out quoates. Then you'll know how much it will be. When I got my bike I heard everything from 4000 a year to 600 a year. Turned out to be lower than that. But I have been riding for years and am older than you. I have an 02 r-6. Anyone that tells you that you need a bigger bike is full of **** and doesn't know how to ride.
Go with the CBR's, they are way easier to ride fast (if that makes any sence, it does to me) GXR's dont really hold their resale value either so when you want to update in a couple years you will get way more out of the honda. Just something to think about

i know i dont need a bigger bike; my brother started out with a 750, and one of the first things he told me was to start out with a 600; i would be glad. And i do know a bit about bikes. About the insurance; I was just wondering. I won't be buying this until summer, and I figure my brother 4 years ago was in the exact same position as I'm in, and got a bike, so I figure the price increase will be about the same.

I started on a CBR F2 back in 1991.. Since then I've only riden my brother's Suzuki TL1000R... Not a bad bike, didn't have the punch I was looking for and kinda tall for me.. My future ride (video provided in sig) is what I'm currently saving for.

ANYONE who tells you to get a full liter bike for your first bike should be SHOT! also anyone who says hayabusa should be shot twice. thoes people have no clue about bikes. bikes arent like cars at all. a beginning driver can drive a v-8 to v-12 car with no problems. but throw a beginner on a full litre bike and ur asking for problems. most common mistake is when a rider gets on a bike, gives it too much throttle, dropps the clutch, gets scared, and slams on the front brakes. you can kiss your A$$ good bye cus you will be flying over the handle bars eating asphalt.
the advise of gettin a used 250cc bike is a good one, cus then if u drop it or slide it you wont cry as much as you would when u do a zero drop (dropping bike at 0mph).
if you insist on a 600cc id stay away from gixxers. they have an overly aggressive seating position due to its gas tank size, and the throttle is way too tight. a good bike is either a honda cbr-f4i or yamaha r6. might wanna stay away from the new honda cbr600rr even tho its the best 600 in the world!
make sure you check your insurace companies first because some will charge you way more than what you paid for the bike. and please get leathers and dont ride in a tshirt and shorts
oh and forget eerythig that you saw on BIKER BOYS. Noone races bikes in a straight line.

by the GXR'S i hope your not talking about the suzuki GSX-R. suzuki dominates in all aspects of streetbikes.

im not planning on getting a liter bike for starters, but i want a decent one, so 600 seems to be fair. Im DEFINITELY getting leathers and gloves and all that crap; I know enough people that have crashed on bikes to respect them. And sometimes it's not even your fault; i knew a guy who hit a deer at 60 on a backroad, and totaled the bike but he had his leathers on...
Here's my dream bike. GSX-R 600 with a 750 motor swap. Stage 3 jet kit, full hindle exhaust with header and carbon fiber muffler, race fairings, polished frame, frame sliders, carbon fiber front fender, and marchesini wheels baby.
