Volkswagen R32 is on the way!
Just today at work, we have found out that we are getting our first R32. It's in transit as I am typing this out. It's A Black Pearl Majic Effect VR6 R32 with Black Cloth. It's on a ship heading towards.....Brunswick,GA......in about a week or two it should be trucked here to New Orleans....then I can go Test Drive the R32. I cant wait...its just gonna be fun....the VW VR6 engines are fun to drive....but the R32 i beleive will have me cheating on my em2 civic. Almost all the top VW dealerships in the US should have them by the end of Jan.
pricing...
Good question......we heard about $32,000-$33,000.
Im trying to find out exactly how much. I have alot of customers waiting for the R32 to come in.
I think the prcing of the R32 might be at $29,000 to $31,000. I know alot of people probably are saying hell with that go get STi or Lancer EVO. TRUE! But the R32 is like a whole different car. It's really something different. You have to test drive one out once it get's here.

I already have my name on the list at McKenna, my local dealer. Actually that one that you have comming to your dealership sound like that is the one that I should be getting. Also I was told by McKenna that the price is starting at 27,999 for the cloth and 29,999 for the leather. Hopefuly this is true. 2000 means more money for neuspeed upgrades and sounds.

I've always loved Golfs, I think they look great and perform really well. That said, why would I pay 35k for a compact hatchback? In the end that's what it is. Just knowing what else you buy with that kind of money pretty much turns me off to it, even though I'm sure it's a really nice car.

I believe that would be true here in north america but in europe, they had the whole line of vw with 4motion for years already...which we never had here...If the car is assembled in germany, not in the south, I would say this car could be a very good bet.

OK this is my car. I am dying for one. The base price is 29,100 with cloth Recaros and 29,995 with leather Recaros. Only comes in 4 colors...silver, black, blue and red. They have been in transit for about a month and the east coact dealers should be seeing them within a week or two.
They are different from the 20th in many ways. Engine, AWD, front and rear bumpers, bigger calipers, guages...and a bunch more. Your everyday driver wouldn't really notice the differences, but any VW enthuasiast would. The pictures that Fraga posted are of the Euro-Spec car. The US version is slightly different.
There was an article in Motor Trend about the R32, I think this months or lasts. There are already 3 turbo stage kits, the third one giving the car about (or more, I can't remember)...600hp. Too bad it costs almost as much as the car to upgrade.
If I had the money, I'd be buying this car.

Why bother............
Next Gen MK5 Golf GTI will use the exact same engine for its "normal" VR6s... and will be a lot cheaper, without the "R32" badge. It will also be offered with 4Motion..... then I don't know the differences will be between the two.
Except the fact that next-gen MK5 is going to be much higher quality... and will have some neat options, like Audi 3.2TT's dual-clutch sequential manual shifter.
Oh yeah, for the uneducated... 4Motion = Audi's Quattro.. same ****. Is it reliable? It is now, apparently... but they used to suck ***. My neighbour's a major Audi fan... been drivin them for over 25 years... he says Quattro sucked for a looooong time. They're pretty decent now though, or so he says.

That R32 badge will make the difference of a couple of thousand if someone were to ever decide to sell their car later. It represents that the car is a limited edition of that model. Again they are only releasing a number of these in the U.S.
You may wait for 2005 when they release the new VR6 and the new body styling but those numbers for the 2005 model have already been listed at 220 Hp, not the 240 that is listed for the R32. Your also getting more extras with the R32 that even further makes it more unique then the VR6. The 2005 GTI goes up from 180 to 200 Hp. And I personaly dont think those prices are not going to stay near the same. I can promise you that the price will go up almost 3G's from what they are already now. So now your looking at the VR6 starting around 26,000 in stead of the 23,000 it is at.
I personaly dont see much of a gain going this route. Maybe I'm wrong.

.... what does it weigh, how wide of a tire can you put under it, and does it still have that primitive rear suspension that all the other VWs have??

Dude, you are hurting if you are buying a VW for the exclusivity of it. R32 exists for no other reason than to get people to TALK ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET FORUMS. You see, the Golf is at the END of its MK4 lifecycle, and sales of pludged drastically recently (by more than 50% compared to 4 years ago). That's the real reason why VW's bringing it over.
As for 220HP vs 240HP... pleeease. Stick it on the dyno and see there's really 20HP difference.... more like 5HP tops. Real reason? #1, it would just shame the R32 now, wouldn't it? #2, 240HP sounds way too close to the Audi TT 3.2's 250HP ratings.
Yes, R32 will still have other goodies, like Recaro seats, cooler pedals, etc etc... but it definitely won't have MK5's stiffer chassis and improved interior qualities. Not to mention the stuff you don't even think about, like improved crash safety, brighter headlamps, better stereo, and host of other improvements. Sorry, but MK5 will be a superior car to the MK4, period. It's called evolution, and VW's damn good at it.
And oh yeah... it won't cost that much more than the current models. Why? When VW was making MK3, they were directly competing against Honda/Toyota. They lost the war. Now, they have moved upscale, to avoid direct comparisons. And it worked for them (& Subaru too). They use higher quality interior materials and such, offer bigger engines than the norm, and charge more. They try to be below luxery market, yet above the "normal mass market." That's why the price increase. However, with a blow recently of the low sales, I doubt they'll be that enthusiastic to jack up the prices. Small increments, yes, there is inflation. But nothing major like $3000 increase.

Mk4 was the best styling imo.

Well that's your opinion... some people said MK3 was the best when MK4 came out.
Some people are the same with Civics... they hate the looks of 7th Gen... styling is purely subjective. However, superiority of a chassis is not. And MK5 is superior to MK4.

I should just point out though that this car is tuned slightly more for sportier/racing purposes than the next gen car because the MK5 would be a mass marketed car. I'm thinking more along the lines of old Type-R and the base RSX.
Well, that's just how I see it.
