How Often should we adjust our valves?

How often should we adjust our valves? I have 2001 civic with 54,000 miles on it and I haven't adjusted the valves yet. If so is there a DIY on adjusting the valves or is it better to get it done by a mechanic?

i was told that if u do a compression test that u would be able to tell.. but i might be wrong. and maybe a leak down test 2
