Well I am sure he's running a strait pipe. Turbo deisel i am assuming? I mean even with my friends 97 gsr, when he hits vtec, and since he has no cat, black smoke just pours out of the exhaust.

Black smoke = particulate matter, at least in a car running on gas, I'm not too sure about diesel. I don't imagine it has anything to do w. a cat or not as both carbon and nitrogen oxides are more or less colourless and you don't find much sulphur in gas nowadays.

It is normal for a diesel engine to produce black smoke under full throttle since part of the oil composing the ''gasoil'' is not burned out completely and yes, it is the sound of the turbo spooling that you can here... My dad used to have turbo diesel truck...
