My civic gets 38mpg on a pretty regular basis.
Everybody else I know is <25 and all of our driving is around town. That's reason enough for me.
Then there's the fact that it's stylish, there is aftermarket support so mine does not look just like everybody else's, and there is potential to be fast through rebuilding the motor or doing a swap. The price was right also.

Elite // thanks for the info, I won't do an engine sway until my warranty is close to running out.
Plus I am a college student, money is a tight situation for me right now. I am doing the online research by searching through forums and other stuff. I just don't choose to post often, the questions have been answered before. Probably by the time I get around to doing a swap Acura/Honda might have a different more powerful engine besides the K20 that they use for the Type R's (JDM Civic and Integra's).

Well , I have a 2001 LX and find it more responsive than the 6th Gen LXs I have driven. None of the 6th Gen LXs or EXs were high performance cars - they still had the double wishbone suspension , the only feature I wish the 7th Gen was equipped with. The 6th Gens all had the outdated distributor cap - that was a joke. I'll keep my 7th Gen.
The Civic was not meant to be compete with BWMs , GT Mustangs or Corvettes. What other car companies are producing true performance cars with 1.7 inline 4 cylinder engines that cost $15,000? If you want "true" performance you should have bought a real performance car - not a Civic - get over it!

this is true with all cars though...the 350 Z for example can in no way contend with a properly modded 300ZX. Especially the twin turbo. Yeah, it is still a decently fast car, and it's great, but definitely toned down. The same goes for the RX-8. Yes it is an entirely different car than the RX-7, but was still designed with the RX-7 in mind. Now the RX-8 is relatively new, and there is word on a supercharger from mazdaspeed, but the original RX-7, namely the third generation, had a 13B powerplant that could also be tuned to insane levels. I think alot of this has more to do with the fact that the consumer market has almost lost a taste for real performance, and has matured to a level where economy and efficiency are paramount. In the past, nobody ever cared about how many miles they got per gallon, safety, or anything that we obsess over now. It was about what car was the performer. Today's cars come tuned from the factory at what the manufacturer considers "optimal for peak performance AND efficiency." They use "cutting edge technology to regulate the vehicle's performance and efficiency levels." In other words, they really don't care what gains your DC TCS exhaust gives you. They care that the average consumer would be satisfied with the fuel efficiency, power, and overall comfort of the car. Price comes with the territory on that one though, especially in terms of power...don't forget....your civic only cost you between 13 and 16 grand...

I bought my civic when I did (2 years ago) because that's all I could afford at time (and still is). I could have gotten a cheaper POS cavalier, or even a Kia, or whatever - but almost everyone whose driven a Honda knows their quality vs most of everything else out there.

Personally I'd prefer buying a car with MORE HP to begin with than to dump tons of money into upgrades.

A performace joke? compared to sport cars, yes. But Civics aren't made for performace. Civics are designed for economy, and they have filled that mold quite well.

hmm.
2001 Honda Civic.
Category: sub 20K Compact Economy Family Sedan/Coupe
this reminds me when the board started... or at least around 2002, and the Civic bashing begin...
its like a butt load of you bought the car thinking it was something its not.
most people KNOW what they're buying when they PUT OUT up to $16,000
do you KNOW what you bought?
its not like the previous gen civics were bolt on power machines. its not easy to pump out power outta them too. its only easier in the sense that they have more product support.
