The E30 M3 was the only M3 that was built as a race car first then modified to be street legal. Seriously, the M3 came in to being because BMW wanted to race in a specific class, and the Regular E30 wasn't compeditive, so they built the M3 based on that chassis. But to race, they needed to Make 500 availble to the general public. it ended up being such a popular car that they put it in to regular, if some what limited production, and thus the E30 M3 was borne.
