Do cops own their cars?

When someone is a cop do they get that car? I've seen police cars in people's driveways before like they live there. So do you drive your car to work every day and then get in the police car, or do you own the car and you drive it to work each day?

I have seen a FedEx truck parking on the same driveway everyday. I wonder whose packages are inside the truck. That FedEx guy probably takes a few weeks to empty it.

well from what i know about NY is that our sherrifs are the only ones that can bring home their cars.. but at the same time.. they do not need to report to the precinct to log on, sign in at work.... as soon as they turn on their car.. they are On Duty. thats why THEY get to bring home thier cars.. and in our state sherrifs have jurisdiction everywhere.

Sherrifs Deputies are county "cops". They have jurisdiction over entire counties, as well over most of the infrastructure of a county law enforcement program. Most Deputies have to pull nuts and butts duty as jailers for a year or two before they hit the street. Sherrifs Department also provide security to courthouses in the form of guards and bailiffs with full police powers in their assignment. Also, since County Sherrif is a political position more than anything, it is therefore an elected position.

Cops cant bring their cars home in most places. Detectives usually are given a car however, like a ford tarus or something along those lines that they keep as their own. That car is unmarked. I'm sure that in some cases people will have their cars in their driveways. If they are home for lunch or something along those lines. Atleast in Michigan anyways.

Yes the county Sheriff is an elected position. The term "cop" is a general name given to most all law enforcement officers. Peace officer is a more acceptable term to use, but cop is easier to remember and say. Peace officers may take the cars home, say if they are on their lunch break, or if they are "on call" meaning off duty, but can be called to duty ANY TIME, thus requiring the use of a cruiser. Oh and it is illegal to own a police cruiser, so no, none of the cars are owned by the "cops."

In Illinois, all state police are required to take their vehicles home incase of some major emergency. Chicago police are only allowed to take a vehicle home if they are higher ranking.

Good try, but not completely correct. Being that I'm a Criminal Justice major, and my dad is a Deputy Sheriff, I might be able to shed some light on the question. Yes the county Sheriff is an elected position. The term "cop" is a general name given to most all law enforcement officers. Peace officer is a more acceptable term to use, but cop is easier to remember and say. Police are for the specific city, and sheriff generally has jurisdictional control over many cities. This is VERY complicated stuff, so I'm speaking VERY generally. Peace officers may take the cars home, say if they are on their lunch break, or if they are "on call" meaning off duty, but can be called to duty ANY TIME, thus requiring the use of a cruiser. My dad frequently brings home the cruisers and I have driven a couple of them....way too much fun! (and against the law..shhhh) lol Oh and NO it is illegal to own a police cruiser, "Impersonating a government official" is the law that is broken, I believe, I'd have to check the statute, but no, none of the cars are owned by the "cops."

Any more questions?
Not to be an as*hole or anything, but how am I incorrect? I am a Criminal Justice Major as well, along with currently attending a police academy. I am really not trying to flame, but I would just like to know what info is incorrect, if at all, so I don't go repeating it. I just thought that saying county sherrifs have jurisdiction over many cites as an overly broad statement. They have jurisdiction over their county...if their county is mostly unincorporated or rural, they may be the only representation of the law. If their county contains 20 cities, yes they have operational co-jurisdiction with the local PD, but only those cities in their county, be it 0 or 34. Hence the name County Sherrif. Jurisdiction, however, does not mean that they are completely in charge. Many municipalities often forbid County Deputy Sherrifs and State Police from operating within their jurisdiction. I.e. staties and deputies aren't allowed to pull people over in municipalities sometimes at the request of the local police department. If you get a ticket in a major city from a statie or deputy, it is a COUNTY or STATE ticket, with revenue from the ticket going to the state or county government. City cops, however, write tickets that give revenue to the city, which is ultimately more beneficial to the city funding for construction, sanitation, etc. You are correct on the issue of Peace Officers being the official title though. That's why I quoted "cop"...they're not cops in the sense of how people think of them, but they are Law Enforcers, bottom line. Out here in CO, parks police, campus police, District Attorney Investigators, Arson investigators, etc. are all "cops" or "peace officers". However, there are different levels of "peace officer." Level 1, 1A (usually reserves...akin to volunteer firefighters, meaning they are not paid for their part-time service), 2, 3, etc. They all however, require certification from an accredited LEA (law enforcement academy), out here called POST certification (Peace Officer Standards and Training). That is 6 months of legal classes, Tens of hours of firearms training, tens of hours of driving. No matter what kind of peace officer you are, your basic training was the same. Whether a state trooper, city cop, or Arson investigator, everyone went through the training of calling in a felony warrant on a traffic stop, how to effectively and safely search an unknown structure, and how to diffuse a domestic disturbance. They are all "cops" to me. As for owning a cruiser, no. But here in CO, certain officers (usually with the rank of technician or higher, but more likely captains and up nowadays) have take-home cars. That would probably explain seeing a cop car parked in the same driveway. He may be a district/precinct captain, or even the chief himself. But yes, take-home cars do exist. Usually they are unmarked, but a lot of the time they aren't.

On the subject of cops parking the cruiser in front of the house. This is one of those funny and humbling stories.

I was doing around 120 on a motorcycle and went flying past one. I (doing 120) didn't get a good look and thought it was a speed trap. I figured I was screwed and pegged it, taking random roads until I got to the closest friend's house. I then stashed the bike in the back yard and waited. It wasn't until WAY later that I went back by and the car was still sitting there EMPTY. Thats when it dawned on me and I felt a little silly.

the cop two houses down from me sometimes brings a squad car home. It feels so good seeing a cop car on my street, even if it's parked and no one's in it.

Funny though. Bad **** happens on our road. 2 Benzs were abandoned in front of my elderly neighbor's house one time (confirmed to be stolen and the interior was somewhat stripped). My neighbors and my tires were slashed. And the bestone yet: The cop's house was broken into. How ironic.

By the way, the term cop is slang for slang. Way back when badges were made from copper, so people called police "coppers" and that was shortened to "cop"

like everyone else said, i dont think they own their cars. however, they can buy their police interceptors from the station (i think)...

my friend got pulled over by a cop taht apparently did that... he said it was a loud ford crown vic rollin on 22's... they were stopped at a light and revving at each other (my friend in a 66 stang). they started to "race" and as soon as my friend hit 30-ish, dude pulled behind and flashed his lights/siren. he didnt ticket him cuz he said he wanted to, "beat his *** on the strip (las vegas motor speedway.. every other friday, drag races from 9pm-2am)"... anwyays.. there's my 2 cents...

OMG again someone proves just how retarded I really am. You are absolutely correct, and I was speaking far too generally. I appologize.

On to more pressing, and relative issues...where in CO are you? Just curious, always nice to meet a fellow legal patron. What academy are you attending? Where do you go to school? Hit me up sometime, it'd be cool to talk to someone here in town.

Hey man, it's no biggie...that's why I wasn't mad...I think we were just misunderstanding eachother. I live in Boulder, but I work in Denver. I am currently enrolled in the 'C' Academy (it only takes half as much time per day, but it is twice as long...geared toward full-time workers) at Arapahoe Community College. Since it just started, however, I am going to get a refund. I would rather just start over at Red Rocks, at a full time academy and work nights. That will start in January. As for school, well that IS school for me. I get 28 credits, 22 of which transfer to CU Criminal Justice. Not a bad gig, but it is $3500 a semester. I'm 21, but have been trying to get into an academy for about 2 years now. (Long story) After I graduate, I already have a reserve position in Federal Heights...a couple friends there, and their FTO program should be an interesting time. How about you?
