the HID ban
i am not sure how long the ban will last nor much about it, i just know you can no longer purchase hid within the states. in that case, even cira-x has stopped the groupbuys.
but if you still want his, you cna actually get it at xenondepot.com, since they are in canada

A little bit of background. NHSTA/DOT has been trying to introduce new laws to regulate the sale of HID... well.. they just decided to BAN ALL HID KITS. They do not have a set regulation because HID does not use a filament.. therefore, no matter how accurate the HID kit is, it fails because of that ONE requirement. Well, DUH, HID has no filament, so it automatically fails.
After 8/15/2003, HID kits as you know it will never be sold again unless new laws are made. I'm sure there are all types of legal issues here, for one, this has all been done without anyone knowing. After 8/15/03, there will be a $5,000 fine PER DAY for vendors selling HID kits.

yea ur right.. if you read the whole article that they posted there are numerous reasons... main ones being that people are complaining that they are distracted by them and they are possibly stupid like deers that just stare into bright lights..
but they also state that there has yet to be an accident because of them..
so why the ban?
this is just gay that their doing this. people finally have bright lights that actually allow them to see the road clearly and avoid hitting things like people, pot holes,etc... and they go and ban them.
next their gonna say that u cant put after market rims on ur car because people like to look at them too much and its distracting.

The problem with HID is that they are so bright people are distracted when driving. Also, the brighter headlights will penetrate the low intensity light beam and make the lower beam vehicle appear to have no or little driving lights till the HID car passes.

Actually, the factory aims them but if you have them replaced (ie. due to damage) the dealership realigns them and use a wall to adjust the height (use the screws on the back of the headlights to adjust).

nope ur wrong cause the ban is not on OEM HID's .. its on people like us who add them to our cars... there are just stupid people who dont understand that you have to aim them or dont know how.. so no dealership is aiming them. thats why its a problem
take an audi for example... because its HID and a projector.. you dont even see the HEADLIGHT BEAM... only like when they hid bump does the beam flash you...

When an OEM puts HIDs on a car, they go through the steps to get them DOT approved. That is what makes them legal.
Here is the real story behind the crackdown. It is not just on HIDs, but on all aftermarket lights. You can design a HID kit which is legal to install on a vehicle, but you have to design and produce the entire light assembly, not simply a light. This is partly due to the reflection characteristics of the light and the lens. So, any company could produce a total replacement kit for the Civic, but it would be model specific and have it approved by the DOT.
The bulb kits have always been illegal because they are NOT DOT approved. You can always get a ticket for illegal lighting. Read your states vehicle code, it is pretty clear on lenses and lights meeting all applicable FEDERAL standards.
Since most people ignore the laws and escape evasion for a long time, the government has decided to crack down on the people with MONEY, not you or me, but the big companies that sell them. They can and are dishing out big fines for any company that continues to sell them.
Can a company make a car specific kit and sell it legally, yes, once it is DOT approved. And there are some taillight kits that actually are DOT approved, so this is not impossible, just more expensive. Will a company make the kit, it depends. Other kits have been made for cars, such as the F-150, and these kits go for upwards of 800 dollars and include a new reflector. These kits are Federally approved, so they are still being sold.
And yes, Virginia, you can still get a ticket for not having your headlights properly aimed.

What happens if they sell them under the pretense, of off road or show purposes only. I know a lot of things like the stupid LED winshield washed are like that. Technically I can have 8 Fog lights intalled if i wanted, as long as they were not turned on.
Just a thought
