I'm not ghetto. I have taste. I like to think I have good taste too. For those local MD/DC/VA peeps that have seen my ride, you may agree. I recently purchased a HKS Hiper rear section. While awaiting its arrival, I decided to prep the car the due date of the HKS. I removed my stock axle back, and drove to the store without a muffler on the car. Ready to install the HKS ASAP, but I arrive at the store only to find out that my HKS has not yet arrived. I drove home.
You may be wondering why I typed all that crap for no reason. Here is the reason behind all this. After driving my car around without the muffler on it, I began to enjoy the sound it emits. Also, you dont have to even worry about the rest of the exhaust piping hanging, becuase it is held securely in place before the rear section. Man, I love the sound of the car now. It has a wonderful throaty idle, and sounds awesome when you punch it at 5000 RPM. For those of you that have no exhaust system as of yet, A cheap (very cheap) modification that I would recommend doing is removing the stock muffler. It is deep, low, good amount of loudness, basically everything that you want from an exhaust.
Just to let you guys know, I am still purchasing the HKS, becuase my main goal in the exhaust system is the sound, then looks, then performance. In this case, I am happy with sound, but it could be a tad bit quieter (my rear passengers complain). Very sexy drone it has. But as a temporary setup, run no muffler, you will be happy. Peace out, and I hope I didn't destroy too many of your brain cells.

Until you get pulled over for running a car without an exhaust. If you're car now has the sound you say it does, dont you think its gonna attract a cop's attention? It's one thing to get pulled over w/ an after market exhaust, but no exhaust at all? good luck with that ticket.

I agree..
Yeah, it's only a matter of time before you get pulled over from it. Cops get annoyed by the sounds cars make with no mufflers. I know the ones here in Cali do.
Besides the ghetto factor of not having a muffler as well as the ticket you will obtain with that rig-job, don't you lose most if not all of your back pressure thus leaving you with little low-end rpm torque? I will stay stock until GReddy comes in.... it's a lot of money, but nothing but the best for me!
yeah the drinker has a valid point, the back pressure goes to the crapper, and I'm not sure if this will be a pain or not, but you should accumulate a good amount of exhaust dust on the bottom part of your car and will make everything very hard to wash under the car... put on the hks, you'll be very pleased
its actually not that loud outside that car, its only loud inside because the exhaust exits under the car. and as for no muffler, its the same as running a straight through muffler. its actually quieter because most perf. mufflers are packed with fiberglass to resonate sound louder. the packing in the stock res. is steel wool like to absorb sound. the loss in low end is not even noticable without a muffler either. you will actually lose more low end with a catback because of bigger piping, smoother bends and most have a straight through design muffler. and its not illegal to run a car without a muffler anywhere but cali and maybe texas. and as you can see he is from maryland.

It isn't illegall in texas, but you will not pass emissions testing. I have a couple of friends that are running 2.5" piping from the cat with just a tip on the end of the piping. One is a 2000 civic lx and the other is 99 accord 4 cyl. Man do they sound like crap. They sound like a freakin old *** truck going down the road. Both are girls and think it sounds awesome, but personally think it sounds like ***.
I have no idea who started the rumor its legal to do this, but I know it is absolutley illegal in all states. It completely violates all emissions/pollution control laws that are held in all the states, not to mention a lot of noise violation laws that some municipalities usually have in place.

Hrmm doesnt the Neon SRT-4 come without a muffler? I coulda swore I read that somewhere. I think the law is if it comes stock as part of the emmissions package, then its illegal to remove or modify.. someone correct me if I'm wrong thx.

My point is, it is not illegal to run without a muffler, but this will cause you to do illegall things. Kind of like it is illegal to possess weed but legal to smoke it. Get what I am saying.

I thought the point of a muffler is to quiet the exhaust gases. That's why older cars usually have louder exhausts than newer cars. So I guess you want to sound like you have an older car?

Okay guys, maybe some of you misread. My main reason for keeping the muffler off is due to the rattle caused by my muffler banging on the 22mm rear sway. As for loudness, I believe the muffler merely alters the sound of your exhaust.
For instance, a factory exhaust system emits little sound, due to high restriction. An aftermarket Apex'i N1 exhaust emits loud sound, due to low restriction. My no muffler setup is probably better sounding than most aftermarket systems, mainly due to my keeping of the stock cat-back piping and resonator, which defeats a good chunk of exhaust dB. I am going to install the HKS as soon as it comes in, just awaiting the completion of my transaction.
As far as the pollution and emissions that some of you were talking about. I think it will do just fine. The only emissions controlling device in my exhaust system is the O2 sensors and the catylitic converter, which has been left alone and remains in tact. Maybe some of you misunderstood, but keep in mind, I said that I only took off the muffler, NOT the headers, NOT the catylitic converter, NOT the B pipe, just the muffler, and it sounds pretty damn good. You all must try for yourselves if your curious. Using stock components of course.
Oh, and the red and blue lights, its alright. I want them to come get me. I love taunting the police, I do it for a living as my second job. I keep my stereo booming when a cop pulls up next to me. When the light turns green, I accelerate faster than them (to speed limit of course). Just staying within my legal limits, for the most part. So, "**** the police!"

I drove my car without a rear section on it briefly, and it sounded like complete ***. It sounded like I had an old blown out muffler on it at anything about 3K RPM. Up around six it sounded like I was headed for a K20 swap it was so awful. Not to even mention what it did to the low end. Also, considering how many plastic components there are under the car, I'm not sure I'd want super hot exhaust gases exiting before the bumper.
i ran without a muffler for a month a while ago. i just did it to relieve the ricer boy in me. it sounds alright, better than some of the other ghetto mufflers out there. and i also live in cali too.

First of all, turn on your car, and put your hand to your exhaust and feel how "hot" the exhaust really is. Second of all, the thing sounds nice, don't judge unless you try it for yourself. D17a2outlaw is correct, it does sound better than some of the aftermarket mufflers out there. Not much rasp, and not too loud. Very sexy idle. I'm still gettin my HKS xX03EXx, so don't worry bout where my exhaust exits.
