Newbie help needed

Hey guys need some help and telling me if im wasting my time or not. My friend gave me a 98 civic LX automatic, boooo booo. The car is in decent shape and runs very well it has a swaped motor in it, tranny is good. To me its a slug, anything i can do to get some more HP and get up and go with stock motor ? or is there a engine swap i could do ?. I like the car and interior is good, exterior needs some love but not to bad. Im open to selling it and getting a better civic that has more potential to start with, not looking to race, just want more ***** behind it. Thanks any advice im very thankful for.

Re: Newbie help needed

For a swap that you’ll actually notice, be prepared to spend a couple grand.

For that engine, if you want to notice an increase power, get ready to spend at least a grand.

I’d personally learn manual (if you haven’t already) and buy a different car.

Re: Newbie help needed

Depends on what the swap was. I'm assuming it's still a D16Y7. You'd need pretty much full bolt-ons + a tune. If you buy used parts, it'll cost $1000-ish for 15-20 extra hp.

Alternatively, you could buy something like an Integra or RSX (50-ish more hp and much better suspension) for probably $3000 (prices fluctuate between states/provinces so I can't give you a concrete number). It wouldn't be a whole lot more than what the civic is worth + $1000 of work.

Thanks for the responce, yes its a D16Y7, can you tell me what parts i would need for the 1k boost on current motor, seems more simple for now ?

Re: Newbie help needed

Exhaust, headers, intake + tune. You’d probably need a cam as well but that would take you well over $1000.

Re: Newbie help needed

Both the integra and RSX are great cars. Of those two, only the Integra was made in 2000 (RSX started in 2001) so I’m assuming you just got the year wrong.

Re: Newbie help needed

I’m almost positive you’re talking about the integra. They have round headlights and the JDM front end has square headlights. RSX’s don’t have round headlights.

D16A6? Good bottom ends for boosting, but still better off with a different car in my opinion.

Re: Newbie help needed

It says d16a but I can't see a number after the a there's a space where there could be a number or it's wore out I can't tell. Okay the Integra does not have round headlights okay cuz I couldn't stand the round headlights and you're probably right an upgraded car is better off.

Pricing those RSX and the type s's not easy to find and fairly pricey most of my found were 6k and up didn't seem like there's a whole bunch of them available but I noticed that there is the RSX and there's a RSX S-Type.

When I look up the d16a says it's a JDM motor,. I don't see anything after the d16a so I'm just going to assume that's what it is.

Re: Newbie help needed

The Type S is a substantial step up from the regular RSX (40hp more, 6-speed with LSD instead of 5-speed, true VTEC, etc). The regular RSX is still a perfectly good car.

It just occurred to me that you could be looking at old Integra's. USDM Integra's from 1994-2001 had round headlights. Before that they were square. Any integra you see between 1994 and 2001 with square headlights has had the JDM front end swap.

The D16 is a good engine to build, but the automatic transmission can't hold any power whatsoever.

Re: Newbie help needed

Yeah the automatic tran is killing the car for sure. I love that Acura integra RSX Type -S, realy cool. Ok so the RSX is cheaper than the Type S, i will see what there selling for. After looking at both cars RSX and Type S, your not getting one for less than 6500k thats worth anything with decent miles.

Re: Newbie help needed

The Acura RSX and Acura Integra are two different cars. The Integra has a B18. The RSX has a K20.

You could also get something like a Prelude (H22). Little bit heavier and slower handling, but probably the quickest of the three.

Re: Newbie help needed

Ok didnt know that about Acura, so the RSX and Integra are differant cars wow. Most RSX i see are 140,000 k miles and higher around 6k or more. I guess thats not alot of money, i can probally get $1700 maybe for mine and come up with the rest. I tell you if i had a stick in mine i would keep it. Thanks again.

Re: Newbie help needed

It may not be a bad idea to find a manual civic with the D16. Best ones are either the D16Y8 or D16Z6. Those came in the Civic EX from 1992-2000.

Re: Newbie help needed

Just for some info the RSX is basically a second generation Integra. In Japan (and maybe elsewhere) the Acura RSX is sold as the Honda Integra. Also, the RSX Type S does not have an LSD. 8th gen Civic Si (SiR up North?) was the first to have one as far as I know.

The base model RSX still has a K20 engine, just a less performance based one. The K series responds to mods fairly well. Plus it would make a swap much easier (i.e. K24 or K24/K20 swap) since the chassis comes with a K series. You would have to have the 5 speed though, the auto would be useless.

Re: Newbie help needed

I saw a Acura RSX near my work got the look at it up close and personal don't like it just don't like the body style just don't like it so I'm kind of ruled that car out. I guess I'm going to be looking for a Civic something that I can put a K20 engine into or it already has one.

Re: Newbie help needed

The civics with K20’s are the EP3, or the 2006+ Si. You’d be looking at least $4000 to swap it into anything.

Which I just looked at the 2006 and above Civic SI it looks kind of like the RSX and I don'tl see a whole lot of difference. Okay I guess I'll have to think about this more.

Re: Newbie help needed

If you want a cheap car that makes decent power (and looks good based on what I gather your preferences are), buy a pre-2001 civic and throw a B series in it (or buy a pre-2001 civic Si with an awesome B16 in it)

those B16 equipped EM1s go for money on the used market if they're in good condition. Just saying.

Yeah I'm seeing that a b16a engine couple I saw on eBay just the engine is 3k. That 2006 SI that you mentioned I'd like to try to see one of those in person and see how that looks.

Re: Newbie help needed

It looks almost identical to a non-Si 8th gen Civic ('06-'11), and they are all over the place. Came in coupe and even sedan (later years I think). Maybe ever so slightly lower with a lip spoiler on the trunk. 6 speed only.
