I've tried a couple places up here in they don't seem to carry newer cars at all...even for my 97, everyone told me the same thing: The car's new, good luck finding a wrecked one or used parts...weird, no? Guess you just have to be a little lucky. Someone let me know if they see a 96-98 Civic in a yard...I'd be greatful!

How do junk yards work though? I went to this one and they had this deal where you had to pay them up front to walk in and look around at the junk. Then for more money you could either carry crap out by weight, or certain items would be by cost. That sucks! I would want to walk in, take a look around and then ask someone how much something was.

So far when I go to a junkyard, they usually ask for what car I want the part from and they have a database to check to see if the car exists on the lot, and whether or not they have the part...never had to pay before I went in (this was one in Waltham, MA). So I guess you could walk around in some or check at the desk directly.

Whenever I have gone to the JY, I usually ask where the type of car I am looking for is in the yard. For example, the Civic's are all in one area. Then I stroll out there and take what I need. The honest thing to do there is to then bring the part inside and ask what they want for it, and haggle the price with them. Most of the time if you do all the work to get the part out, they'll tell you something like $10. Not that I hang out at junkyards all the time, but it's amazing the items you can find out there when you can't afford to buy it from the dealer. BTW, make sure you bring some basic tools with you if you go....
