My friend has a 92 civic HB with a GsR motor swap..
He's got a Apex'I World Sport exhaust. So it's the quietest one in my group of friends.
He got pulled over last week for a loud/illegal exhaust.. soo okie whatever ryt. he went to go get it checked and found out. The State of CT has made a law that exhaust tips can be no bigger than 2inches .. Can not hang low, and must appear and sound to be stock..
They didnt pass him on the test so he has to rip out his catback and get a stock one to pass. They will be telling other people during the emissions process too.. If you dont pass than you cant re-register your car the following year.
By the way, I have a N1 muffer and the tip is 4.50 to 5 inches...
anyway, I just heard of it.. I was kinda pissed that night..

I disagree, the law must not be as simple as
"The State of CT has made a law that exhaust tips can be no bigger than 2inches..."
A new Cobra has dual 3' exhaust tips. If this law is correct, they will no longer sell Cobras in the state of CT......

Havok2K1- yes I agree that sounds like some BS to me. Otherwise they'd be pulling every modified car + what about the places that sell the exhausts ie Manchester Motorsports and if they install the exhaust they still keep your warranty (they're a Honda dealership if you don't know).
i've heard a bunch of stories like that but i dunno how true they are or how much they're inforced, when i got my tanabe srm on my car my friend said you cant have a tip bigger than 4", i wasn't sure if i believed him but anyway i measured mine and it was exactly 4", i do know about the 96desible(sp) limit and im sure mine is over that cause my silencer fell out and got ran over and also i'm runnin with a downpipe on so its real loud, but i havn't gotten pulled over for havin too big a tip, i even asked local cops, they said as long as you're not being too much of an annoyance then they wont bother ya
True that havok sounds like BS. i have a stock tip on my car. and i think it is at like 2 1/4" - 2 1/2" if you think about it, it cant be right. 2" is very small almost all stock are that if not bigger. a guy at my work has a 350z and his are 3 1/2" dual exaust..
Don't forget the law (if it exists) may apply to aftermarket exhausts only. In the case of a stock vehicle coming from the factory they are exempt. The officer knows the size of the stock exaust, and then writes a ticket based on the presence of non-factory pipes.

Okie.. I asked my friend the Q again. he said its not a law that an officer would enforce but what the new emissions and DMV enforces. so when we go to test our cars we will fail.. thats what he said.. dont hold me to it. he is going back to the DMV to get it in writing if possible.
and yes. it can not be bigger than stock. for civic's anyway is the 2inch size

You know, if everyone stopped buying fartcans with 5" tips that are obnoxiously loud, and clamping them onto their 1 3/4" stock pipes and revving at every opportunity, then this wouldent be an issue. For gods sake, buy a real exhaust system that sounds good, and actually does something other than give you 2 HP and the sound of bees infesting your car. (note: the exhaust system I just mentioned doesnt exist for a civic because the stock exhaust is perfectly fine for our weak engines, and freeing up all that 'backpressure' won't do a damn thing for you.) Seriously now....when was the last time you heard a civic rev and went "damn, that sounds awesome....so powerfull" I bet thats never happened.

just wait til I start revving my engine (without the nasty backfiring through the intake)
whatever the law is, it's a bunch of crap and for our cars getting emissions in CT, forget it all that they're doing now is flashing our ECU to make sure that the O2 sensors and some other things are running smoothly. This is for all 01 + cars (we luck out). Mom and pop places are doing it and do you think they actually care how big your exhaust is. As long as they get their $ they could care less. As for a cop pulling you over for an exhaust too big (ya right), but if so make sure to get a 50 state legal ie DC TCS, and take em to court.
I think a law like that (exhaust tip size) is a tool for police.
If they are out and about and they see a fart can exhaust they probably don't care.
However, if they're out and about and they get reports of street racing in the general vicinity, then I'd bet you they're going to pull over a vehicle with a non-stock exhaust over a stocker. They'll make the assumption that the vehicle with a non-stock exhasut has been modified for a reason other than to sounds pretty.
I don't know if my assumption is true but watch the shows on street racing. If they spend any time with the cops they'll say that they look for stuff like that if they have reports of street racing. That way the cops become an annoyance and the street racers have to take it elsewhere...

FYI, 3" piping is required for motors pushing 500hp.....
I agree on the tip rant, but everyone likes a nice sounding exhaust, whether warranted or not....
And PhatChevy, you are 100% right. If such an idiotic law exists, it's only for police to use if your out causing trouble.... Don't be a moron, and you won't have any problems.....
