Changing oil for the first time. Need opinions.

hello civicforums.

I have been a Honda-head for the past 12 years. I am 18 and, unfortuantly, have never changed the oil in a car before (I know it's sad, but nobody ever taught me).

Anyways, I have an EM1 with a swapped B16a2, with approx. 80-90k miles. I've read up on how to change the oil and filter and I am looking forward to doing it for the first time.

My questions are what is the recommended oil? 5W, 10W, 20, 30, 40? Which one?

And also, do I have to replace the oil filter everytime I change my oil? And if so, what do I use? Is it car specific?

Thanks everyone.

absolutely replace filter everytime you change oil wherever you can get a filter they will tell you what kind of filter as there are a multitude of different types of filters and 7th gen civics take 5w 20 i dont know about 6th gen check the oil cap though that might say if it doesnt then ask an auto parts retail store they should be able to look it up changing oil is very easy and changing my oil is what triggered me to start learning more about cars and building mine

Here's another question.

When do I stop filling the head with oil? As in what mark on the dipstick am I looking for? And I want to get synthetic oil, correct?

Thanks. This is my last set of questions.

I think you need 5-30 for your car check the oil cap as stated. Pour in about 3.5 qt of oil and check the dipstick. Pull it out wipe it on a cloth put it back in pull out and read the level. The clean oil will be about the middle of the two lines add 1oz or so checking after each addition till your pretty much at the upper line. I like to keep it at the upper limit line, but anywhere between the two in fine. Just remember when at the bottom line your running risk if your car burns any. Keep it full. always check on level ground.

Oh yeah run the synthetic and I say get honda filters. i buy them buy the case about 5.10 each for case of 30 on line. (4 hondas in the house)

Good luck

HeY dude quick reminder. Don't forget you have a swapped engine, the oil filter may have changed so don't forget to mention the motor size and name. Seen many people blow engines from using the wrong filter.

Luckily the swapped motor I have is in fact, a B16A2. haha. So I know I got the right filter. But I thank you.

Overall, it was a success. The oil drain was easy, but messy. The old filter removal was the toughest thing on Earth. I couldn't get it with just bare hands and a rag, so I did the hammer a screwdriver in it and use that as levarage, but that didn't work. So after about 30min of yelling and hard thinking, I used some heavy (100 grit) sandpaper as added grip and it came off no prob. haha

I put about 4 qts of oil in it and let it run each time I put it in as well as let it sit.

I'm proud of how I did and look forward to doing this for others, as well as for myself in the future. I thank everyone who helped me and hope this helps others looking to learn how to change their oil.
