Greetings and Exhaust Fastener Q's

Hello!

I figured I'd just combine the intro with the question since it saves space. I've been hesitant to join for a while since I'm already registered to a billion forums already but decided whatever.

Anyways, background. I don't actually own a Honda *GASP!* but my brother does and I do all the work on it, so I figured if I'm going to be dealing with it this often it'd probably be wise to join here. He has a 98' EX Coupe.

So here we are now to the question. My brother's exhaust pipe has a horrendous leak that kills flies from vibration on the inside of the car. It is on what I call the "S" pipe, which the entire S section has rotted away, but the rest of the exhaust is just fine. Me, the Technician, Had him order the resonator pipe for me to install. Now, I work on plenty of cars, but me doing my job, I'm a reconditioning tech, and have the privilege of working on cars made within the last decade and nothing older. I don't deal with rusted exhaust often (or much rust period).

I live about 3 hours away from him and will be driving down with my tools to fix it. I can't look at the car right now, and when I originally looked at the piping, I didn't get a chance to look at the front flange fasteners close enough. All I need to know is what fasteners are needed for the front flange of the pipe. I know the back 2 are spring bolts. Instead of fighting rusted bolts or studs or whatever is there, I'm just going to use my cut-off wheel and cut the old ones off, and put new ones in. I need to know what they are though so I can tell him what to get.

The new pipe probably won't come with new flange gaskets, so I'm going to assume I'm going to need him to get those too.

I'm going to try and get them off first with some penetrating oil and a 1/2" impact. If that fails on the first try the cut off wheel is coming out. My guess is that I'll either break off the head of the bolt or nut with the impact, or I'll just round it off.

So far the tools I'm bringing are pretty basic, but if there's anything else that would be recommended, by all means tell me. Right now I'm just bringing a set of wrenches from 8-24mm, 1/2" impact w/ 6 point impact sockets, cut off wheel, 250mm air hammer w/ 5 chisels, wheel bearing grease (For hangers), 3lb sledge, and 4lb deadblow.

I'm hoping he can get everything at the local parts store, including gaskets. I'm guessing so.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Greetings and Exhaust Fastener Q's

Thanks

It appears that it uses springs in the front as well, and only two in the front. I had read somewhere that there were 3 up front and 2 in back, but without seeing the car I couldn't verify.

I noticed that the flange gaskets for the front of the center pipe and rear of the center pipe are different. We'll be buying the hardware locally at the only parts store in his town (Autozone) and they show a flange gasket for the manifold, and one for the cat to center pipe, but none for the center pipe to muffler.

Here's to hoping that the exhaust pipe takes about a half hour

EDIT:

I crossed some reference numbers and found that the pipe for the EX coupe uses a different pipe that does indeed have 3 front bolts. I somehow didn't realize this from the illustration.

I don't seem to see whether or not it uses flange bolts and springs and if they screw into welded nuts or if I need to get some. A picture of it would help greatly.

I found this for reference to the pipe that is being ordered. There's no parts for what is needed for the 3 bolt flange.
