Hey guys,
It's about time for me to think about dropping some serious cash into getting an engine swap for my car. I am thinking K20 Type R and then dropping a turbo of some sort into it. Now my question for anyone that can help me out here is, what is the most reliable turbo that I should drop the cash on? I see some major brands out there, (Greddy, Edelbroch, Etc..) but I need some input. I don't want to spend all kinds of ends on something that is gonna eat my engine alive. i have a couple things to say, then the answer...so read as much as you want.
1) You are going to spend close to 10grand on this swap, then you want to ruin a good engine by wearing it down with a turbo? I would go NA with that engine: Intake, Headers, Exhaust, Cam Gears, Cam Shafts, Hi-Flow Cat, V-TEC Control, Flywheel, Clutch, Short Shifter. With those things on that engine, you would be 14 flat easy.
2) Traction, a lot of people seem to overlook this. I guess some people just think that they can stick a big turbo with lots of boost, and just shave the seconds off...NOT TRUE, i would, if you havent already, seriously work suspension before a turbo drop. BIG tires mainly. Otherwise, you'll go to race someone and you'll just be sitting at the line burning seconds, then when you do get traction and shift, you'll just break loose again. I had a friend with an MR2 with a huge turbo (talkin 500whp), he even had a widebody kit, with big tires and whatnot and he could barely keep it on the road during a race.
3) To answer your question...you are on the right lines with GReddy, and i would say HKS if they ever get their act together and get that turbo out.
Let us know how your swap goes...i'll be doing it fairly soon too...latest this summer (i'll probably wait for all the goodies to come out from HAsport i.e.- wire harness, radiator...)

The type R engine has a high compression ratio. That high a compression ratio is not conducive to turbocharging.... to run a lot of boost you would have to do internal work LOWERING the compression. If you plan on turboing a K20-series engine, I would recommend buying maybe a Type-S engine and turboing that, less headaches in the future. NoBottle is absolutely right that other parts of the car would need work with that much whp.... take things one step at a time. A Type-R engine with bolt ons will still be pretty quick in our little civics.

Also, i hope you dont live in california...the Type R will not, or ever pass smog here. Yes, if they do bring the type R to america that motor will, but straight from Japan, which is what you will be getting wont pass. Also, i know the whole issue on gasoline was talked about, i didnt get the whole story or the answer, but something about if you dont use a really high octane (like what they use in Japan) you wont get the potential power out of the car. But as i say, that might have been solved some how, or maybe im just way off. If you do live in cali, and you do get the Type R, and it comes time to SMOG, i do know of some people that can help you out for a price...but thats your choice if you want your car to be shady like that. Im going to do the Type S swap, and just go NA on it, and run like a 14 flat. Thats all i need for know...just to see a Mustang V8 get worked by my civic will be priceless.

First drop the K series Type R in there. Then go to ClubRSX.com and look in their forums under Boost. You'll find a sticky with some nice reviews of all the turbo kits for the RSX.

Ok that's cool info. Thanks guys. I think that what I may do is instead of the turbo I will supercharge that engine along with some other work that my buddy told me about for the car as well. The high compression ratio of the engine does seem to be a bit of a problem in it's stock form for turbocharging, however I think that a supercharger may be better for it based on what my buddy was telling me. He is into all this stuff like hardcore, but most of the time unreachable as he is very busy which is why I come here less to get more info anyway. Can't rely on only 1 person. So supercharge a Type R? How about a Type S?
On a completely seperate note, would it be beneficial to just turbocharge or supercharge the stock engine in the civic as it stands now? It's a LX so it's a step below the EX as well. Thoughts?

People seem to be oblivious to the fact that there isnt, and never will be a supercharger for our car. No one wants to even attempt it. A turbocharger is a much better goal on the D17, cause its been done. That compared to a RSX-S, or R that has FI...well...there isnt any comparison. The RSX whatever would be better.
I think the idea of supercharging your RSX motor is a much better idea then the turbo, but i would still do it to the S.Really there arent that many differences in the engines except...ones not legal in cali, and in probably every state where they SMOG check, one has LSD (but you can put that on the S), and so on with the little things. If you get the S, put a Hondata ECU on it...you can increase the redline, and HP (by about 20whp), and torque (dont know exactly), and smooth out the power and torque curve. 20whp on the S is far more hp over the R. Just some food for thought
