Gude Big HP Info
Whats up, Ive read the old threads about the Gude performance company and most people just talked trash about it. I have had many back and forth e-mails to the same guy about this stuff. I asked if they had proof about how well this really works, and here is what he showed me...
Dyno test Honda civic 1.6 s.o.h.c. stock 96 hp torque 99 ft pounds with head package 144/147 hp 118/119 ft pounds ford zetec 2.0 zx2 zx3 107 hp torque 111 stock head pack with long Gude he 1 hp tq. 163 both are daily drivers with great gas mileage. It looks pretty impressive to me. He gave me a price on all of the individual parts too...
the first price is the one you pay after ist all said and done, the second price is the refund you get for your parts, the third price is the base price of the part (in case you want to keep your stock parts)

I personally think this is a great deal because I would love to have my car be N/A and have around 180 HP. With all this done then you will have no problem running some turbo later or NOS. Just thought you guys might want to check it out. I plan to buy the pieces one by one.
CALL 909 244 3533 OR 909 245 7577 for more info or just go to gude.com and send an email to sales. A guy named Bill will help you out.

I like the idea of NA with some extra horses too. No more crummy add on parts. I'm going to start saving for the Gude stuff now, since I already got my body and suspension mods on and a completely stock VTEC engine.

Its a pretty sweet deal. I plan to start with the throttle body and cam just to see how much different my car responds. If I see a big (or pretty decent) difference, I will probably get the rest of the kit.
Actually if you plan to turbo your motor later, do not change out the cam. Performance cams for naturally aspirated engines are usually long-duration and have a higher overlap, which is the exact opposite of what a turbo wants. So stick with the stock cam if you want to go turbo.
Also, the port and polish procedure will be different for a turbo engine than for a NA engine. Make sure that whoever does the port and polish knows how to modify the head for the type of performance you want. The Endyn site has a really good description of the different types of port and polishes that are available for different types of engine apps.
Building up a NA motor and building up a turbo motor require very different procedures and setups. It's not like you can take a NA performance engine and just slap a turbo on it.

I am considering doing it. I don't know though. If it makes the hp they say it does, a new clutch will be needed shortly after install. Plus, the cost of paying someone to remove the head and reinstall the new one, and the shipping costs. Hmm...I will have to check into it. Seems like this would require more fuel, what about that? My main concern is reliability. I plan to drive the vic into the dirt even if I buy something else, I will keep her on the side.
Go for it, get it done. I have a friend who got his 2001 civic ex ported and polished and know he's running 13.5 seconds int quater. He also has the whole DC sports system on also. Im getting my done in a few weeks.
I would have to see some pics of his timeslip to be convinced of that. I find it extremely hard to believe your friend is running 13's in his 7th gen Civic. Even if he had the entire Guge package done, and the package upped the whp to around 150 (which I am also extremely doubtful it is capable of), there is no way he is breaking 13's. Just check out Honda-Tech.com or Club RSX - there are Type S's who have intake and exhaust and are putting out close to 170 whp and even with that none of them have gotten into the 13's yet.
The power gains are quite realistic. It's all standard old fashioned hot rodding tech. Only difference is we now have bigger TB instead of rejetting carbs and in the olden days you had to install your own electronics and now we have computers and electronic inginiton and stuff already on the cars.
Let's put this into perspective:
A stock Ferrari F360 Modena runs the 1/4 mile in about 13.3 to 13.5 secs.
A stock late year Integra Type R runs the 1/4 mile in the mid 14's
I'll give my full support to aftermarket companies who make quality engine parts for our Civic, but let's be realistic. If you expect a simple Gude package to propel into the mid 13's you are going to be sorely disappointed.

Well, according to my handy dandy HP calculator, your friends 2600 lb civvy would need about 208.86 hp at the wheels and about 271.52 hp at the flywheel to run a 13.5 quarter...I can buy it that a port and polish may get you up to 180 hp, but almost 210? Hmmmmmm....14.2 (from 180whp), maybe....13.5...doubt it highly
A simple port and polish will not get the D17 up to 180 whp. A Stock D17 puts out 100 whp, and some headwork is not going to result in 80% more power. Creating power basically boils down to forcing more air into the engine and making sure you get enough fuel in there to feed the extra air. Massaging the head will not get you anywhere near that much airflow. The only way to get that much air is to force it in there (forced induction). Meaning nitrous, supercharger, or turbocharger.
My friends who have had a port and polish done on a Prelude gain at most about 20 hp. Again - there are an infinite # of ways to do a port and polish. It all depends on what you intend to do with the engine (NA, forced induction, daily driver, drag racing, etc.)

with the head package and all the bolt ons available and a 50 shot you got a quick car for the street. be happy with that... quit worrying about running certain et's.. you're not going to have an all out dragg car until years to come when the aftermarket is more plentiful for 7th gens. i'm happy with what's out

I just want to know about the reliability of the car after adding the gude package. That is what I am concerned about. Well, that and how much a shop is going to charge to do the work and what a new clutch that can handle the extra power will cost.

I talked to a hot rod guy at my work and he said to install the cam and throttle body and all that it would only take like 4-5 hours. You can buy a service manual and do it yourself on a sunny Saturday afternoon. I would recommend having some help from a car guy though.

Hmm..I am going to start checking into it. I am so darn busy it is hard to find the time to even make phone calls. Well, I am free right now, but it is 3am in the morning and the 'normal' people are all asleep!
