Alright, there is that piece towards the end of the exhuast that I thought was a cat (doh!), but I think its a resonator. is it safe to remove? anyone done it? how does it sound? considering i weld on a piece of piping into its place.

Well ill be honest. im gonna write u a lil review home slice
OK so what does the resonator do you may ask? Well its traps in carginogens and chemicals that are toxic to the air. It also makes the exhuast more silenced. So what will taking it out do you may ask?
Well ur civic will be blowing out white smoke at start up. Ur civic will also either sound just shitty or awesome depending on which exhuast setup u have. Currently Im running a tsudo N1 cat back with meagan racing headers and down pipe. Its sounds mean as a mother ****er! growl. So anyways ya I dont know where u live but in most states there is a smog check. Basically with ur res gone Ur gonna 100% fail unless u give the smog dude a BJ! JK at that. But ya for me I kept the downpipe and res cause when smog check roll around in a good cpl of years just swap it in really fast so you can pass.
So is it illeagle to take ur res out? Well theoritically yes but in many states the police and enforcement just dont care. They want to catch bad guys and get called to calls. The least thing on their mind is gonna be some kid in a honda civic without a res.
So in conclusion is it worth it? Well I think so. Ya u are gonna have white smoke, pissed off neibors, and a really loud car. But it is so worth it. It will raise ur HP by a smigen.
Hope this review helped u and many others.
Take care

PS. U are going to loose some low end torque so ur gonna have to change ur driving style a bit
PSS for this awesome review gimme some killer REP points

wtf I was joking
not even an AEM V2 adds that much hp to our engines in combination with a header and exhaust

wtf is that guy talking about.
there is only 1 cat on the civic, and that is connected to the header. that is a resonator in the back. it is suppost to keep the noise down.
i have a k20a3 with a stock type S header and cat, connected to a 2.5 inch mid pipe straight to a stock type S muffler. i passed a smog test in california... all you have to worry about is that first cat if you want to pass smog. since a d17 is such a crappy engine, you will not gain much hp
while your down there, just get a complete mid pipe to the muffler...
