Racing Harnesses

I'm looking for a racing harness for my 7th gen. I autocross in the HS class. I plan on only using the harness for events, not regular driving. Are there any harnesses below $100 that are SCCA approved?

Also, are they easy to install?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

Good to hear you only intend on using them for autoX events.

I'm not sure on the harnesses part, I personally would go to diff forums and look for a used one. I see them in the subaru forums all the time. Other than that I know for cost purposes, the some kind of lock that holds the stock belt in place, do almost a good of job as harnesses at keeping you in place.

I've heard 4-point harnesses are adequate for holding you in place. Just not been in the scene very long so not sure on the specifics.

I use Schroth Ralley 4 harnesses for autocrossing. They are DOT approved.

Click the link below for a DIY on how to install the harnesses. I wrote it.

Thank you. So the shoulder straps are held on at the back seat?

Where would the other point be polted if it were a 5-point?

I would never use a 5 point harness. If you strap in correctly you don't really have to worry about submarining with these harnesses. Our cars dont go that fast. 5 points are a bitch. Who really wants that strap hugging your nuts?

You will have to drill and create your own mount point for the 5th strap.

Ok...I was told that SCCA requires 5-point...from a reliable source...but I don't think it matters for me...I don't go to the national events or anything.

Even stock belts are fine for SCCA. Whoever told you that was a moron. I run my car in the SM2 class.

Define SCCA approved.
They'll let you run solo II with anything thats bolted TO THE CAR. 3 and 4 points are fair game for autocross but you need to bolt them down to the car I'd use existing seatbelt mounting points to do it.

for club racing you need 5 or more (you need the anti-submarine strap aka the nut strap) , and obviously a cage and all that crap. 5 points require a new seat for the strap to come up through the bottom, but they're not of use for autocross. Everyone I know of who's been involved in an on-track incident with 5 points has switched to 6 points afterwards. I'm sure you can guess why.

UNder 100.... Sparco harnesses are about $90. thats the cheapest I;ve seen. A good way to do it is to watch for people to sell their expired harnesses (FIA and SFI tags have expiration dates and club racers have to replace belts)... those are usually cheap but most connect to rollbar tubing. I have OMP harnesses, they were about $120. You can buy a junko harness off ebay for $60ish I think off brand poo, but if you just want to autocross with them, I don't see why it can;t work... you just need it to hold you in. A key feature to get is the tailstrap release (its a buckle on the strap so you can take the harness off the seats and have use of your back seat).

Well I've heard very negative things about 2" straps so I'm going to go 3". I've seen $10 harnesses on ebay. No thanks. I may just fork the extra $ and get the Schroth. I have an installation guide, and I like the security it will provide. I like how it looks too. Thanks for all the input...I'll try to be more precise on my definitions next time

so just to clarify...i just bought my sparco harness tonight....if I bolt this in using the stock belt locations, I will still have use of my front seatbelts when the harness is disconnected from the tail strap and not in use..correct? Or am I ditching the stock belts altogether?
