the "real" definition of a cold air intake is any intake that places the filter before the radiator so that air entering the intake system has not already been heated up by the radiator. most cold air intakes place the filter down in front of your tire. this is bad because you run the risk of sucking up water and hydrolocking your car.
a short ram intake is a very short intake designed to reduce vacum in the intake system. however you will be sucking in hotter air with one of these.
traditionally, short ram intakes have been accused of robbing low end power and CAIs of robbing high end power. this of course all depends on a million factors, but thats just what goes around.
personally, i wouldnt waste your money on an intake for a D17. i was seriously considering getting one about a month ago and i did a lot of research and read as many threads as i could about other peoples experiences and it all seemed to boil down to "well i really couldnt tell a difference" or "i had X intake for a while and i put my stock intake back in and i think i actually noticed gains". the truth is your stock intake is a rather genius little trinket that does its job remarkably well. if you can, save up for a turbo. thats the only thing worth doing imho.
i dont know jack about headers/exhaust, ill leave that for someone else.
oh yeah... welcome to the site!!

dont get that no brand peice of junk intake. go with aem or injen cold air intake. and i dont think there are 4-2-1 header for our cars. only 4-1. i say go with kamikaze, hp, or obx header. DC sport header sucks on d17 motor. exhaust...IMO i like the tanabe SRM exhaust the best cuz of how it sounds. the skunk2 and greddy evo exhaust are good as well. and another thing...even if you do fix up a d17 motor, it will still be slow.

don't get that junk intake. as for intakes get an AEM v2 or K&N FIPKII system. As for header, kamikaze and obx are good. as for catback, i say go for the tanabe or greddy.

search up intake, header, and exhaust on these forums. many many discussions about them. its been known bolt-on 'performance' mods give minimal to no power at all. intakes rob your low end and juice it up at the high end. same goes with exhaust and the 4-1 header.

all I have to say is either get boost or swap it with a k20. All bolt ons are a junk feels no difference and is a waste of money for little gains. trust me on this, and check out this forum, u will get the same answers

CAI / SRI FAQ
header = Kamikazi or HP (obx and DC sports suck for different reasons)
Exhaust = anything
I/h/e = barely a performance gain for close to $1000
IMO, theres no point in buying name-brand stuff if you get no gain. The only thing i would spend a good amount of money on is the exhaust because it'll take the most abuse and you want it to NOT sound like a weed-wacker.
Save up and spend your money on suspension stuff or turbo.
