Unhappy air intake or not - I'm skeptical.......

What's up?
I have looked at dyno charts, read reviews, and asked friends,
about air intakes, It really seems an air intake does very little for
gains, I could care less about sound without any hp or torque gains
too. I am considering K&N fipk II as an air intake or an iceman CAI,
but I don't know if I want to shell out $200.00 for little to no gain.
Also, my friend tells me I can just remove the stock resonator and get a different air filter and this will work too. I have a 2002 Civic lx 5 speed coupe. Give me an answer on this. Just better looks and sound
for my car or some gain (not just high end RPM's gain?)
Thanks,
Riptide

For looks and sound, AEM short ram or cold air. For performance, K&N FIPK2.

to be honest adding a Air Intake really wont give you any real gains, it's more benetficial to add a turbo or do a engine swap.

everylittle bit helps use a combo of parts to help up hp from all levels no one single easy mod will put your eye sockets in the back of your headthe biggest gains are the most expensive ie turbo, supercharger, k20 swap all big bucks. i have a 02 lx also and i have a aem coldair and exhuast along with a engine ground kit when the outside temp hits 40 or lower you feel the power its there just not a huge gain.

I have had the AEM cold air and the injen short ram...I just recently switched to the K&N FIPK II and that is the only intake that I noticed any gains...I highly suggest it if your looking for an intake gain wise

I/H/E could get you - at the most - 25whp. That's what the dynos I've seen have shown.

What? I don't think so. Maybe 5whp on our cars if that. The AEM intake I had actually gave negative hp! Must not have been on a 7thgen.

Had the AEM short ram on and since went back to stock. Car seemed slightly faster in the upper RPM range, but so slow down low where you spend most of your time. Since you've been looking at dyno charts you know most mods add peak power near redline (which is what's usually advertised) but decrease power in certain RPM bands below. Give and take. But 1 or 2 horsepower here and there all add up. Haven't tried it personally, but the K&N looks pretty good because no worries about hydrolocking but still isolated from warm air for the most part.

Actually, that info is from dynos done on '01-'03 EXs. Also, it was for intake/header/exhaust (hence the part where it says i/h/e). If you search the members' rides section, you should be able to find them.

wrong. Everyone doubts the D17 engine for some reason without even knowing anything about it. Stock i dynoed at 100.58hp. With my intake and exhaust i dynoed at 116hp.

Bluestk01's car dynoed at 125hp with i/h/e. I was there and I have it on video.

What does that tell you?

It always cracks me up when people write this. Of course it is more beneficial to add a turbo or to do a swap!!! But who honestly has the cash to do that? Maybe a select few of you who have saved up all those pennies for 2 years and those that actually have the know-how to do a swap. But for all us poor, working-for-a-living-to-pay-a-mortgage-and-don't-depend-on-Mom-and-Dad-anymore stiffs out there, these are not options. They are merely unattainable dreams that somehow slap us across the face everytime someone ever-so-nonchalantly posts "Hey just get a turbo." Sure, let me run down to Wal-mart and pick one up. I think they are on sale this week!!

i don't want an intake or an exhaust coz black cars are often modified to have a stealthy look.... which i am trying to do.

and having a loud fart cannon or a loud intake would totally destroy the stealthiness of it, IMO

I like the look of aftermarket exhausts tho but I hate the sound... even of a silenced one which is still a little louder than stock right.

my black civic

I agree with you man, I want my black
civic coupe stealth cool, with few mods
what do you mean by stealth for black
cars man?
After doing more research and looking
at the dyno's (thanks ya'll) there is no
way in hell I am gettin an intake . Now,
I believe the only intake worth anything
for our civics is the K&N Kipk II, the others
are a total rip off with marginal gains.
The K&N Kipk II gives our civics 4.6 hp
gain high end, no low end hp or torque
loss like the others. However; for just
4.6 hp gain at 6000 rpms, forget it! I will
use my $200+ dollars for something else
for my cool civic. Next mod, is FREE, clearing
the headlamps for that more 'stealth look'...

Looks like you have it figured out.

Fly, I was only doubtful because I myself lost power when I got an intake, and felt no gain with exhaust. If the gains from all three are so high, I wonder why people always complain that these mods don't give much power? I guess AEM and thermal are bad brands. Whatever. I'm now going down a different path anyway.

maybe you guys had reallly reallly dirty factory intake filters thats why when compared to a brand new I/H/E combo the gains look reasonably large.
id still say only way to be any kind of quick or have any kind of actual performance is to boost the motor.

Well everything is relative. An I/H/E setup on our Civics can give us 20-25whp. An exhaust on my friend's Grand Prix will put down numbers like that by itself.

The 6th gen Sis respond to mods pretty well, too.

To answer the main question and trying to stay off the "which brand intake", I will say this, intakes may be 1 of the better choices for a 1st mod. But it does depend on what you are looking for or how you drive and such. Unless you have $ for turbo, I feel this is 1 of the better deals.

I think the DH-racing crank pulley is gonna be THE mod to get instead of an intake. We'll have to see. Intake gives 1-2hp on average. Their pulley gives at least 10whp. Much more with single groove pulley. And it's cheaper than most cold air intakes. Only $140 shipped now!

The 100.58 is probably in whp (wheel hp).

Yeah. 127 is at the crank or whatever. You lose some power going through everything to the wheels. So, the 127 at the crank becomes about 100 at the wheels.

All cars work this way. The hp you see in the stats is at the crank. They all lose some power as it's transferred to the wheels.

If Honda lied about their hp, then they'd get busted like Mazda and the RX-8

I thought 5 speed EX's dynoed at about 110HP and LX's at about 100.
