List of bolt-on's for more HP
What is the easiest way to get more HP outta your Civic without hurting your wallet, i know already about Exhaust and CAI...wondering what else is out there.
Lets see if we can get a list, and what kind of HP you'll expect for the bolt-on. And how much it runs in price

intake: 2-5hp, $100-240
exhaust: 1-5hp, $400-650
header(upper portion): 1-2hp, $150-250
header(w/downpipe&hiflow cat), 5-15hp, $200-300
these are just what i remember reading from previous posts
at least a 10hp with these basic bolt-ons totalling about 850. worth it or not? depends on the person i guess

well, I know you said bolt ons, but a very effective mod is a Port and Polish of your head. That will run about $700 - $800 for a good job, but it should add about 25 hp, so it may be worth mentioning here.

if you do the i/h/e AND the PnP, then they will really complement eachother. If you want to go further, then you should get the i/h/e, PnP, titanium valve retainers, new SS valves, racing valve springs, 10.8:1 pistons, a lightened flywheel, and a new intake manifold. That's a lot more than bolt-ons, but it really isn't that much more. If you get a PnP, then you will have some downtime with your engine disassembled...so why not put another 5 or $600 into it? go to www.dh-racing.com For all the internal stuff.

Don't forget about the things that make you slower:
heavy subs
heavier than stock rims
big rims
pretty much anything that adds weight or extra drag

so basically the main bolt on's are exhaust and CAI, then in order to make serious power you have to either port/polish the head or go boosted.
hey what about a 50 shot of NOS?
any problems with hooking that up to stock motor w/ no internals upgraded?

get a K20...thats good gain...
then work from the K20 (even if it's from a Si or base RSX if you can get it cheap)...still better than D17...cuz D17 sucks...
i wouldn't suggest spending 2ks to mod a D17...not worth it in the long run...better spend that money on a more decent engine...gain will be more significant...
after you spent 2ks on your D17(not turbo)...you'll prolly have like emm 50hp gain and you'll still be slow compared to other cars? while spending 2k on a K20 will give you some better results...anyways, thats just my point of view...
do it the right way : K20

i dunno i had a K20a3 and it didn't seem "that" fast, it was quicker than the D17 but still its only 160 at the flywheel and after i/h/e you prob have around that with the d17
did you ask why the K20A3 and K20A2 have a 40hp difference? and why K20A has 220hp? it's the same engine after all (honda 2.0L)...and did you think about making the K20A3 as fast as the K20A2 or even the K20A?
i don't know why but i'm sure you can make a K20A3 as fast as a K20A with the correct stuff...with the same amount spent (~2000$) on a K20A3 than a D17, you might get the K20A3 as fast as the K20A (thats about 60hp increase)? and you haven't done I/H/E and other stuff yet...
but after you've done all the I/H/E and PnP and other stuff...you'll be at 170-180hp with your D17...what else can you do if you're still not satisfied? turbo?...ok thats another 2-3k...and after that you'll be at 280hp...still not satisfied?...
and thats when you say: "damn, i shouldn've swapped my engine for a K series at the begining..."
after spending 6ks on a D17
anyways, K series is the way to go if you want performance...

just get something clear, honda didnt make the D17 for hardcore aftermarket tuning...
its a economic engine that will get you from point A to point B...thats all...
you can't get performance out of a D17...

you could go as high as a 55 shot of nitrous with out any internals on our cars. get it installed correctly and dont use it all the time and do severe damage should happen to the engine. but, prolonged use of that stuff will kill your engine either way.

the market isnt that big for our cars as of right now, but if you give it time i'm sure lots of stuff will come out. look at the d16, they have tons of stuff for it and even that was a economic engine.
