B-Series Swap or D-Series rebuild?

I just became the new owner of a 1993 Honda Civic EX. Needless to say I didn't spend much on it and it needs the full work through. Starts and runs, but it puts a jackhammer to shame. That being said would it be possible to still get some more out of the current engine by rebuilding it or would it be better to swap in a stronger JDM B-series engine with VTEC?

It has 200,000 miles on the dot. Most electrical parts of the car are either worn out or not working, which is to be expected considering I only paid $150 for the whole car.
Although it will take a few months to get it in a condition that I would consider good, I am more than willing to put in the work.

Oh I failed to mention I believe it has a D16Z6 in it but I haven't pulled it yet to confirm that information.

Re: B-Series Swap or D-Series rebuild?

Depends on a few options

-how long are you keeping the car
-how well do you understand swapping engines
-how much time you have to swap
-how much money you're willing to spend.

You may already know but the swap means swapping the
-engine
-transmission
-mounts
-wiring harness
-might have mess with the shift linkage
-might have to mess with the axles
-larger rims for the larger knuckles/brakes
-plus things I don't know about

I would be keeping it for a long time if not indefinitely. I understand the magnitude of an engine swap which is why I want some advice.
The budget isn't a set number cause I know it needs everything not just an engine and drivetrain. But for just engine purposes let's say $1500.

Re: B-Series Swap or D-Series rebuild?

Also if I rebuilt the current one I would be building it to take at most 400hp. So it would be pretty close if not more than $1500 to just do the engine rebuild. I kinda like the idea of keeping it original engine and body. Infact I'm gonna keep it the factory color which is white with tan interior. The transmission is another story though. I'm having trouble tracking down a manual transmission that would work on that engine if it is the D16Z6 I think it is. Would also need some steering in the right direction there. Please and thank you.

So I have looked around and I am honestly lost cause I just found the factory stamped engine type and it says D16Y8 but all the research I have done tells me it's suppose to be a D16Z6 for a 1993 Honda Civic EX.

Re: B-Series Swap or D-Series rebuild?

The engine blocks are basically the same and will bolt to the same transmission.

D = SOHC 4 cylinder, small size
16 = 1.6L

Y8 is an option for the head, vtec option, compression and intake manifold.

Re: B-Series Swap or D-Series rebuild?

That's very interesting indeed. I thought it would put a damper on my plans cause everything I have found and priced was for the Z6 head but if it's just a difference in camshafts and VTEC switch over I could still do what I want. You think I could get 250Hp out of a stock rebuilt head with Vitara pistons and HBeam rods? Or would I have to replace the crankshaft and rebuild the whole head to get that?
