Toyota/Nissan racer needs civic info

If you opened this knowing it's a Toyota guy, you are a good person and thanks. I figured I'd ask the swap guys since we are the most intelligent. (88 supercharged V6 MR2) I need some quick info. My buddy and I have been autocrossing 240Z's and MR2's for 25 years but we both have had nothing but civics as daily drivers. My buddy has a stock 94 Si he bought new. The 1.6 VTEC engine is starting to knock. Can we throw any 1.6 vtec engine in there? Will a 96-2000 longblock hook up to the 94 intake? Do I have to stick to the 92-95 Si and EX Vtec 1.6's? Thanks.

I may race Toyota's, but I put my family in a honda.

if you swap from the current engine to a 96-00 that would be a d16z to a d16y swap, the problem with that is your converting from an obd1 to an obd2 engine. Much simpler to stick with another d16z6 since that's a straight swap.
