starting problem
Have symptoms of bad Main relay, but relay passes all meter tests & have a new relay that gives same random no start problem. Pump sometimes will not prime, all lights on cluster come on & go off as expected. Have checked ground for ECU at thermostat housing & it is near perfect. Wondering where the ground for the main relay itself is? Have no other available ECU to swap out. Also wondering @ the ignition switch itself. This car only starts when it wants to! Fuel pump must be good since it will start & run, but whenever the pump doesn't prime - no start! ECU code is 16, fuel injection or main relay! Ready to pull my hair out! Oh, my bad I don't have any left to pull out.

Re: starting problem
Ignition switch is a possibility. Easy to connect a test light to circuits elsewhere, to see if it is working when the car acts up. Might take a few tries as there are multiple circuits to test that are involved with the switch.
Main relay usually shares the ground wires at the thermostat on other cars, but your car is too old for the Honda site to have diagrams that I can look at, so this is just a guess on your 88.
ECM usually controls the main relay operation, so........
A wiring diagram and voltmeter and/or test light, and you could figure out if the ECM is actually turning on the relay when it is supposed to be.
Pull the ECM out and take the lids off, look for leaking capacitors on the board (random google images)
