Older Honda, new owner questions

I recently replaced my 1996 manual transmission Saturn with a 1995 automatic transmission Civic DX. I’ve been driving manual for about 16 years and am trying to get used to an automatic. It was bought from a dealership and they couldn’t provide much info on the car.
I replaced the plugs, wires, air filter and oil right off the bat. I’ve been doing some light driving of it while I continue to work on the car; there are 3 issues I’m encountering, and need some advice about possible DIY fixes before I take it to a shop. My next plan was to replace/flush the transmission; should I be looking to do something else first or what should I do next?

1. There is no tachometer on the dashboard, but it feels/sounds like it’s revving well over 3000 RPMS when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th gears. Is that normal for a Honda model?
2. When ever I apply the brakes between 10 mpg and about 40 mpg, there is a sudden, sharp lurch to the right. Otherwise I’ve experienced no other issues with the brakes.
3. When making turns, there is a pronounced knocking for the entire turn until the wheels straighten up.
So far it’s gone through 1 tank of gas ad it’s average 34 MPG.

Re: Older Honda, new owner questions

Transmission service for automatics is best left to someone who really knows them and that isn't me.

The pulling and knocking may be related. Check to see if the boot is torn on one of the driveshaft CV joints. I suspect you will find one torn. That let's water and dirt into the CV joint and rather quickly destroys it. If this is the problem, you want to take care of it before it comes completely apart and leaves you stranded.

A half shaft is not expensive, available at the local parts store (NAPA/Autozone/O'Reilley's, etc.) and isn't that hard to change, but it may require some tools most people don't have around. The axle nut takes a big socket and it torques to something like 135 ft-lbs (I don't have the specs handy), so unless you have done it or have the tools and a helper who has done it, let a shop do it.
