89 Hatch is Giving Me a Headache
89 Hatch is Giving Me a Headache
Hey guys and gals, hoping that I can find a little help on the forum. Obviously I'm new, but I've done a lot of digging around and am still at a loss. So here's the situation:
Brother in law bought a non-running 89 Civic hatch w/ the 1.5 DPFI motor. Roughly 200k on the body, about 120k on the engine (newer motor from a 90). Throw a new starter on the car and it works perfectly for about a week. I get a phone call saying the car has just died and won't start back up. I get the car back to my place, push it in the garage and start poking around, the car will crank but not start. Now before I get flamed by the vets, here's what all I've done.
-Replaced spark plugs & wires
-Replaced PCV Valve
-Replaced Fuel Pressure Reg.
-Cleaned EGR
-Cleaned IACV & Replaced gasket (had a code for the idle control before, so I did this just to be sure)
-Reflowed all solder joints on Main Relay
-Plugged in new ECU to check
-Confirmed compression across all cylinders
-Confirmed fuel pump is operational
-Confirmed fuel filter is not clogged
Symptoms:
-Cranks but won't start
-Starts w/ carb cleaner, but dies as soon as you stop spraying
-Fuel pressure up to throttle body, but seems like no fuel into the cylinders.
Anybody have any thoughts? I hate to send him to a shop and have him pay through the ear for something stupid I've missed, but I'm running out of ideas.

You can make it run when you add fuel....I can't hand you a silver bullet, but here's some basic thoughts. Each answer nets a different question, but I can't draw you a flow chart. You need to do some logical thinking.
You say you have fuel....but is there enough pressure? 35-41 psi is spec.
Fuel isn't getting into the engine....or not enough fuel?
Does the injector squirt ANY fuel at all when cranking?
Injector getting a pulse from the computer? See if the injector wires can flash a noid light when cranking it. Maybe bad injector if the light flashes but no fuel squirt. (Make sure you are checking the right injector, one is main, one is auxiliary.)
If there is no pulse to fire the injector....
See if there is 12v on the yel/blk wire while cranking.
Computer makes a ground pulse on the red wire (main injector) or yellow wire (aux injector). Only one should get a pulse from the computer for basic running (main).
Which one of the signals is missing--12v+, or the ground pulse?
Computer has to see all the signals from the distributor before it can fire the injector. Got all of those?
