broke the temp control slider

on 1994 ex. The plastic connecting the **** on the AC/heat panel to the lever back behind the dash shattered. How hard is it to get that panel off the dash, or do I have to remove the dash altogether to kluge some sort of replacement? Or is this so common that there's a well-known solution/fix? It didn't take much to break it. Thanks in advance.

The plastic piece is replaceable if the metal shaft isn't broken: http://www.hondapartscheap.com/index...ATER%20CONTROL
