90 civic DX

Bought my son an old civic, duked it up, did the mechanicals and all is well except I cannot get a new rearview mirror to adhere to the windshield. The old ceiling mounted one was broken so I just bought a new one. Have tried 3 times now with the stuff they sell at the auto parts stores and no matter how long I let it sit, first adjustment to the mirror and it falls right off. This is a new driver's car so it's essential to get that mirror on to stay. Any suggestions? I've cleaned the window with the attachment kit every time, used a razor blade, etc, to make sure the window is clean clean clean. Doesn't matter. Help, he's so ready to take it out as he just got his license and I feel bad I can't fix this.
