87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
the light had come on but the car ran fine.
i bought the car, it sat on someones lawn for 3 months. it ran fine the first few days and i replaced feul filter and air filter. the feul filter was real dirty. fresh super unleaded. it was on Empty when i got it. it drove home fine on the little bit of old gas that was in there.
now similar to another no acceleration thread, it idles up and down, and wont rev under load, feels like its driving up hill, tach doesnt work, but it'll pull for a second then bog...you can shift and eventually get to 60mph but something is wrong.
i dont have a feul pressure guage, but it seems to have plenty of pressure as evidenced by the feul squirting everywhere the FIRST time i replaced the filter.
the feul tank is very pressurized all the time, is this telling me anything?
thanks

Re: 87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
the one light closest to the driver side is staying on, not blinking, the pgm fi light on the dash has gone out but the car still wont rev to 3000 rpm, the tach worked for a minute or two.
thanks for the link.
not many responces on this forum, is there a m,ore popular forum?

Re: 87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
thank you lazlong for your replies.
a few questions about my car...87 civic si five speed, feul injection:
is there another feul filter near the gas tank?
is the feul pump in the tank or outside? i see something near the driverside rear wheel.
the box with lights under the passengerside seat...the one closest to the driverside is staying lit but i couldnt tell what that meant. i got your PM and did read those sections but came up with "TDC" or something...top dead center?
pulled spark plugs they look fine no carbon or oil, look like chocholate milk color.
i'd been googling the symptoms...somewhere i'd read that the tach is somehow involved with the feul pump? well the tach only works sometimes and mostly just jumps from 0-1000.
thanks again!!!!

Re: 87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
Man, why are you making me think so hard!? I haven't even seen an '87 in ten years.
-Only 1 filter, should be on the firewall. You're probably looking at something for the fuel tank vapor system (charcoal canister or such).
-Fuel pump is in the tank. Don't know if you have to drop the tank or it's under the back seat, sorry.
-Box under the passenger seat is the control box. What pattern is the light blinking? According to the service manual it'll be a 4 light pattern. If you've already deciphered that it's the TDC sensor then replace the distributor housing. Check the cap and rotor also and if need be just replace the whole distributor.
-And finally, what the hell is chocolate milk color!? If you say the coolant or oil then you need a new headgasket.
I think you need to find a real paper service manual- either by going to craiglist, eBay, or try here: http://www.helminc.com/helm/homepage...vlB&usg=AFQjCN

Re: 87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
thanks for your reply.
chocalate milk color...thats the color of a spark plug thats been pulled from a good running engine, as was taught to me and seems correct.
yes i changed the feul filter on the firewall.
i think its the feul pump thats in front of the rear driverside tire as its cylindrical and has feul lines and electrical connections.
my lights arent blinking a code..,. the furthest driverside light is staying lit...there wasnt an answer for that on the link you sent me. only if the furthest passenger light is staying on so i'm confused.
the engine seems feul starved..
thanks again.

Re: 87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
Plugs are fine.
Yes, that's the fuel pump you're looking at. Page 11-29 in the link I sent ya.
According to the chart on 11-8 if the diagnostic light (on the control unit) stays on it's a bad control unit or a short.

Re: 87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
i bought a feul pump. i'm thinking that the old one is schmutzed, but still working.
the engine seems to run when the tach is working. when the tach doesnt work it seems to be bogging... not everytime tho, and the car ran fine for about 200 miles without the tach too so....
thanks again.

Sorry, bro.
From my last post: "According to the chart on 11-8 if the diagnostic light (on the control unit) stays on it's a bad control unit or a short."

Re: 87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
will it run without the box? bypass the box?
i bought this thing to save money, reached my limit already.
i posted it for sale on craigslist. 700 bucks.

Re: 87 civic si pgmfi light on, no acceleration
Hey guys funny i even found this page. I bought the car off Grovvinstuff for $475... It wound up being a clogged catalytic converter. so i hollowed it out and reattached... no pgm lights and car runs excellent. Jersey's pretty strict with emissions but i have a guy who will throw a sticker on there for me!!! The computer system was fine, it was only telling me the engine was being 3/4 of the way restricted.
