1988 crx
1988 crx
Hey all,
I need some advice concerning my recent purchase, an 88 CRX. It's been heavily modified, engine swapped, and used to be a track car. I just replaced the steering rack and new brake pads so it will at least ride decently.
Basically, it won't pass inspection as the idle is at 2,500+...the previous owner said it's modded with a Phearable basemap. It gets up and goes. Now, this is nice, but not all the time for city driving. I would, ideally, like the car to have some go to it, but not ridiculous like its set now.
Please excuse my newbie status, as I'm sure I might make some eyes roll...
But do I need to reprogram the ecu, or a chip in the ecu, to get it to a more street reasonable basemap? Or can I tune the car physically to override this?
Here is the description of all the mod's that the owner provided for me, granted I can't figure out the engine size, or the transmission type - I was told by a mechanic that the release bearing on the clutch is going out, so I'm trying to figure out the right type transmission/engine so I can get the right replacement clutch.
ANY suggestions, information or help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: 1988 crx
You'll be able to determine the specific engine and transmission based on a number code on the block.
If the engine idles at 2500 rpm then the previous owner has the current base map set-up at a race tune, what you'll need to do is find someone in your area with experience tuning phearable chipped ECUs. You might be able to find someone through a local civic club capable of doing a cheap street tune, but most likely you'll need to book an hour on a dyno with a pro tuner. A tuner will be able to lower the idle for you and program in settings more appropriate to the street. It should cost somewhere between $125-150 an hour..
Now, please post pics of your car for us to ogle.

I went to a Cobb shop and talked to them and they said they didn't know of any shops in my area - Austin, TX - that would do that kind of work. Which seemed strange to me... Yeah I already expected to spend that kind of money...

Re: 1988 crx
I don't think the guy at the Cobb shop knows what he's talking about, there are at least 10 shops in Vancouver that can dyno tune. I would hit google up and try and to find a performance shop, look for one that specializes in tuning Honda motors if you can.
Off-topic, how do you like living in Austin?
One of the grad schools I'm considering applying to is there, but I suspect it would be quite the culture shock.

Ok, I need to call ALL the performance/tuning shops I can find then. I'm just not sure how well known Phearable is, and would I need someone who is an expert as this particular chip?
Austin is awesome. From Vancouver, though eh, can you take the heat? =) 85+ temps for 6 months a year.
Ok, so I'm looking for a code on the block, where abouts exactly on the engine?
Really, I'm a car newbie, apologies in advance!
Thanks

Re: 1988 crx
You may need to switch over to chrome if you can't find someone capable of tuning Phearable, although it shouldn't be to difficult for an experienced tuner to figure out.
I'll post a picture of where on the block the code is in a few hours, for now, essay finally finished, time to sleep.

Hey man,
Ever get that pic?
So I did a little more investigating, and it sounds like I may have a leak in the intake that would make it idle that high. Oh, and I can feel that it needs a new clutch...but that shouldn't be too bad =)
