Hi All,
I have the front end of 98 Honda Civic CX apart to install new axles, rotors, and loaded calipers. Before I started this work, the car would vibrate violently between 65 and 80mph, and applying the brakes would always cause shaking (rotors). Once under, I noticed the cracked CV boots and decided to do axles as well. The car has 167K miles and I have had it since 120K. It seems to be well maintained and I plan on keeping it forever. I love that car and don't mind putting some money into it to keep it in top shape.
While I was in there, I was thinking about replacing the front suspension. The car is entirely stock and my primary want in a new suspension would be a comfortable and smooth luxury ride. I have no interest in a performance suspension.
What suspension components would you recommend?
Do you think that replacing the rotors, balancing the wheels and having the car aligned will fix the vibration at speed issue, or at least be a logical first step in troubleshooting the problem?
Do you think I should replace the wheel bearings while everything is apart?
Is there anything else under there I should inspect and/or replace?

Sounds like a good first step. Are you using OEM parts?
I would also check your ball joints. I think you should have an upper and lower if I remember correctly. Those are probably either leaking grease or worn. They will help tighten up the front end.

I am using OEM size and fit parts, but I bought brembo rotors and bendix calipers hoping for a little extra quality. I imagine that the ball joints aren't too expensive, so I will look into picking some up, and you are correct, there is an upper and lower on this car.
The steering was also a little loose in that there was play in it before. What might that be about?

Since comfort is your main goal, just replace your shocks with new OEM ones. That's as comfortable as they can get. Your springs will be fine. With 167k, I'm sure the shocks are pretty worn.
