Wont turn over (good starter & new cables)
Wont turn over (good starter & new cables)
Hi,
So I suddenly ran into an issue with starting my 1998 honda civic DX standard. I thought it was when I last started it, I held the key 1 second too much and it fried the starter. Well, Autozone said it was a bad starter so I got a used one from salvage yard I still had credit to use up. Tested it at Autozone and Advanced AutoParts and they are good results.
Next I suspect some bad ground so I replaced the + and - battery cables. For the -, I did the battery, and 2 engine ground I saw had green buildup. The + cable from battery to fuse box and Starter solenoid are brand new. The ground tab on the starter solenoid broke so i spliced a new spade connect. I traced that ground back to into the harness and quickly back out, with 2 wires to 1 ring connector that was grounding next to a coolant hose and sensor. I disconnected and cleaned the hole and surface and the ring.
Now everything is back together and I still have the same issue, The dash lights come on and when I turn the key, the lights reset and dash brake light appear and goes away. Radio lights flicker, but no starter noise. If I have the 200amp jump starter connected and I turn the key, the starter struggles to turn over.
I didnt see a starter fuse. Fuses under the hood all looked good. Battery good as 12.63v. I have the clutch starter switch bypassed with a piece of wire. Distributor, cap, rotors, plugs, wires, all done recently. I read something about the ignition switch?
I should mention I've had a leak for some time now, since I bought it, and have run it a few times with very low oil. After one incident, it seemed to have started leaking more. Its a RMS leak and oil pan. Clutch is near end of life so Im planning everything together.
I am going to take the plugs out next and rotate the engine to see if there is resistance.
Car runs fine, I can pop start and drive.
Thanks

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
