'98 Civic LX needs help with spark plug wires
Hey guys, I just purchased a '98 LX Civic Sedan for commuting purposes and thought I do a tune up. So, I joined this site in hopes of learning from you guys.
First thing on the list is to change the spark plug and wires to NGK. But after searching on Ebay & Amazon there are several different wire sizes to choose from. 8.5, 9.3 to 10.2. I really don't know what those numbers mean nor do I know which one to choose from. Also, what is the difference between the blue & red wires?
TIA (Thanks In Advance) for your help!

hmm, usually standard ngk wires are blue. the sizes are the mm of the wire (thickness) and depends on the engine. your old wires should have the size printed on it. the HX uses different wires compared to other models (LX/EX). your NGK should be HE76 NGK (part number W0133-1616099).
for spark plug, ngk v-power copper is ZFR5F-11

Hey Gearbox, should we ever have to change the spark plug coils in our 7th gens? Sorry if that's a noob question, i've never seen that before.
Also, what was the point in using the coils instead of wires? More direct power?

^technically no, coils are not a wearable item and should last the life of the car. you only change them individually if they fail, and you will know it when the whole car shakes from misfires. there is no benefit to changing an old working coil with a new one. the direct-coil ignition system is a big upgrade over the distributor/wires system and its primary benefit is more power for the spark. other side effects are better gas mileage and smoother engine. plus you dont need a distributor. all the hi voltage is generated in the coil pack, and a signal wire connected to each coil from the ecu tells them when to fire, improving response time.

What are the usual symptoms of damaged spark plugs and ignition wire set? If my car usually has misfiring would that mean that I need to replace the plugs and wires already? Sorry for such a noob question but I am not that technically inclined when it comes to car problems. Thanks

usually bad plugs (or wrong brand; only use ngk or denso in a honda) or wires causes misfire. but if that doesnt fix it, then it could be fuel related like fuel pump or clogged injectors. if the car sometimes drives fine, its prolly the plugs/wires.

When I clicked on Amazon's feature to see if it fits my car (6th Gen.) it says it does not. Yet it shares the same HE76 but doesn't specify p/n.
It states it fits the 1999 Civic. Didn't know there was a difference between the '98 & '99.
Can anyone confirm that there is a difference? Or will the wires work?

You can get new wires for cheap at your local auto parts store. They will find you the right ones. It is easier to return them if you have any problems unlike amazon. Just my

True but I don't know if they carry NGK wires. And if they do I know they'll charge an arm & a leg for it.
Unlike most, I'm on a strict budget. Thx for your .02

i think you should look for some with the same part number. there may be slight differences even tho they are prolly the same thing. stay away from cheap store brands, people would bring those back in a few months later when they failed.
Re: '98 Civic LX needs help with spark plug wires
I have never had a problem with store bought brands. I have never used factory wires, on any of my cars. Just don't buy the "make your own" sets, they do suck.
