What is this opening?
Hello everyone, new to this forum because, of course, I have an issue.

I popped my valve cover off with a jerk which caused a screwdriver to flip and I am pretty sure I saw the bit come and and fall into this hole. Ive tried looking for diagrams and I suspect it is some kind of oil return. I am using one of the claw grabbers to probe for it and the hole seems to go for 16+ inches down. No luck locating it and I would be happy to hear someine say it might be in the oil pan now.

Re: What is this opening?
Yes, it is one of four oil passages. I was going to suggest using a magnet and if that didn't work drain the oil and/or drop the oil pan. Congrats on getting it before starting the engine.
When using ratcheting style screwdrivers on an engine this kind of thing can happen. Best to use a magnatized one that holds the bits in or avoid them altogether.
