SRS Light and driver seat
SRS Light and driver seat
Hello again,
I didn't know what to name this thread...so that's the best I could do. I bought a 98 DX and since I've had it the SRS light has been on. Couple of different details I notice. Both the driver and passenger air bag covers (the part of the steering wheel and dash) are a different color then the interior. The interior is grey and the covers are I guess a faded brown. I thought the problem with the SRS could be no air bags, so I looked and I do have air bags. The driver seat is a different fabric then all the other seats in the car. Like the prior owner changed it because it ripped or something. The seat is plugged in to the seat belt. From what I googled all of these systems are interweaved (Air bags, seat belts). Could the different seat be the problem? Is there any real way to systematically problem shoot this? I already attempted the "jumper" method, the SRS did go out....but came back on in about a minute.....
Thanks for the ideas and help.

Looks like it should be a really simple system.
Drivers air bag and passengers air bag only.
SCS connection (read codes), and MES connector (erase codes).
So first you need to read the fault codes to see why the warning light is on.

Re: SRS Light and driver seat
So took it to a Honda dealership to get the SRS code read. They stated I need a new SRS Unite Part number 77960-S04-N94. My question is I cant find that exact part number on ebay, but I can find SRS unites from 96-00 civics. Does it have to be the exact part number? I have a 98 DX.

Did the dealer tell you what the code numbers are?
Did they try erasing the codes to see if the problem returns right away?
(Maybe you should try it yourself)

Looks like Honda used 3 different suppliers for SRS systems:
Seimens AG, NEC, and Keihin
Nothing in my info says any of them can interchange.....
In the interest of safety for you and your passengers, I'd say you need to get the correct part number, as the car was designed.
Also, check the part number on your original unit, it may differ from the parts catalog number. That may give you another choice to look for.
Re: SRS Light and driver seat
Here is the exact write up: "Retrieved SRS DTC 10-01 -SRS Unit replacement. Cleared SRS Code, Cycled ignition switch and code reset immediately, needs SRS unit replaced see quote."
I found a exact part number on ebay that matched the quote they gave me. I may order that. It appears that the SRS unit out of a 98 also can go into a 2000.

Re: SRS Light and driver seat
Oooh, 10-1 says airbag(s) have been deployed. (all 3 brands agree on this code)
SRS control unit replacement is the correct answer, but after that is completed you may get to discover more issues that the computer may not have been able to report.
(Sometimes the computers aren't able to accurately self-test circuits once airbags have been fired, therefore you may discover other issues once a good working unit is installed. I do SRS work for bodyshops, I state this disclaimer to cover my butt because I know it happens.)
Were you already aware the car has suffered an impact hard enough to deploy airbags?
Were the airbags and any associated components replaced properly?
(I've seen a salvage titled car that had resistors hacked into the wiring to fool the control unit.....that's a lawsuit just waiting to happen.)
The part number they gave you is used in cars from 96-2000, but only certain cars. Not all.

Re: SRS Light and driver seat
Nope, wasn't aware the airbags were deployed. That could explain why both the steering wheel and passenger air bag covers are a different color then my grey interior. The air bags were replaced, but who knows if it was done correctly. Well I guess Ill replace the SRS unit and see if the red light goes off. I honestly can't complain seeing how I bought the car for cheap and just drive it 100 miles daily. Thanks for the help again!
